Books for soldiers
Just in time for Veterans Day, I got a press release yesterday about an author providing laughter to people in a pretty dreary situation: soldiers at war.
William Douglas Little provides one copy of his book, "Mexican Bowl Fishing and Other Tales of Life," to deployed U.S. troops for every book sold on his Web site, according to the release.
"Because of the harsh conditions of war, it's hard for soldiers to complete reading novels," the release says. "However, 'Mexican Bowl Fishing' is a book of short stories that brings laughs to everyone that reads it. A soldier can easily read a few pages which brings inspiration to their life."
I don't know anything about the book, but it seems to have gotten good reviews on Amazon. (But remember, you have to buy the book through his Web site for a book to be donated to soldiers.)
I wonder if there are any other efforts like this to provide books to soldiers.

If anyone would like more information on the Books to Soldiers campaign, there are several recent TV and Radio interviews linked on the homepage of my site, (www.WilliamDouglasLittle.com). The links are to the right-hand-side of the page. Simply click on any of the pictures to see, (or hear), the related interview.
The campaign ends on December 10th so that we can get books to the troops prior to the Holidays.
All the best,
WDL

In light of both Mr. Little's post below and the email I've received from him, I'd like to rescind my comments besmirching his intentions in this program. Obviously, there was much more to the story than was conveyed in Ms. Vogel's blog entry.
I hereby apologize to Mr. Little for jumping the gun and rushing to judgment. He's a good guy and is doing a good thing for our troops.

There is at least one fairly well-established book donation website out there: http://www.booksforsoldiers.com/

I'd like to thank the Gazette Xtra for mentioning my books for soldiers campaign and also address the important concern posted by JimPl here in the comments section.
Unfortunately, I didn't get the opportunity to do an interview with the Gazette to explain the program in full, but it's important that you know that this effort is being done in conjunction with the Missouri National Guard, who has also sent press releases supporting this program. I assure you that this is a legitimate campaign to which I have donated far more than the number of books sold, already. The program has been well received by the National Guard. I've also been blessed to have shared some laughs with a few of the soldiers who have received my book.
Like many of you, I have several friends serving, and have recently watched a close friend deal with the loss of his son in Iraq. It's the stories that these soldiers have told and the suggestion that the book, (a collection of humor-genre short stories), would be a great one to have during deployment, which first gave me the idea to launch this program. And, I'm proud to see the end result - that soldiers are enjoying and sharing the book with others overseas.
During this program, I am delivering a copy of the book to the National Guard for every book sold on my website. (And, the price on the site is lower than the Amazon price by nearly a dollar!) Both copies will be signed and the troop copy also gets a message of gratitude - a "thank you" for serving.
This program runs through December 10 and the troop books will be delivered to the National Guard before the Christmas holiday. Please consider joining me in this effort to send a little humor along with our deploying military, or, contact your local recruiting office to find out how you can send items of your own directly to our troops. Either way, it's important that we show our troops that we support their hard work and sacrifice, wherever they are serving.
All the best,
William Douglas Little

I know of at least one midlist author who recently initiated a book drive for the troops. He collected books from fans and sent them on to the soldiers. He accumulated quite a lot of books and mailed them all on his own dime.
And he didn't ask anyone to buy his books before doing so.
To me, Mr. Little is merely using patriotism to sell copies of his book. He should be ashamed.
