Sowing the seeds
I bumped into Elizabeth Hough, Hedberg Public Library's public information coordinator, at the Janesville Farmers Market on Saturday.
She was handing out pamphlets talking about seeds with pictures of flowers, but she was not promoting some new library garden program.'
No, the library is trying to sow the "seeds" of literacy in the community's youngest members. The "Growing a Reader" program is raising money to donate literacy packets to parents of infants at their two-week doctor visits. Each packet will include reading lists, tips for reading to babies, a library card application, and best of all, a coupon for a free book!
If you donate $25 or more, the library will put your name in books donated to babies. Now, I know the donation should be its own reward, but I like the idea of a child seeing my name in her book and knowing someone out there she doesn't even know cares about her.
And besides all the obvious benefits of early literacy, this program is a genius way to make early, lifelong customers of the library!
For more information, visit the library at 316 S. Main St., Janesville, or call (608) 758-6588.
