Road trip down memory lane

If you love children's literature, you might want to take a trip to Chicago's Newberry Library this fall.

The library is hosting "Artifacts of Childhood: 700 Years of Children's Books" through Jan. 17. The exhibit will include the first illustrated edition of "Aesop's Fables" from 1485 and a first edition of Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" from 1865.

In case you haven't noticed, I trace my childhood through books. There was the "Harold and the Purple Crayon" period, the Shel Silverstein years, the "Anne of Green Gables" phase that never really ended.

When I was 20 years old, I bought a hardcover, illustrated copy of A.A. Milne's collected Winnie-the-Pooh stories. I figure books like these are investments for when I have kids someday. (Kind of like my expansive collection of Disney movies.) At least, that's what I tell myself.

Anyhow, I think I'd have a great time at the exhibit. Anyone up for a road trip to Chicago?
