Celebrate National Library Week!

By Stacy Vogel ( Contact )   April 17, 2008 - 11:22 a.m.

It's not too late to celebrate National Library Week, which ends Saturday. Click here for a schedule of events taking place at Hedberg Public Library. The week culminates with the arrival of "Mosi," the library's new mascot, all the way from Africa. (Also be sure to check out Mosi's travel journal. It's adorable.)

I'm not sure Janesville residents know how good they have it. When I arrived in Janesville, one of the first things I checked out was the library. I found it clean, attractive and well-stocked.

I grew up in Milwaukee, and while I loved my neighborhood library, I'll be honest: It was a bit of a dump. The downtown Milwaukee library is great, but it's such a hassle to get there. (I got my first and only traffic ticket leaving the downtown library, but that's another story.)

In Janesville, I can walk to Hedberg and spend hours reading a book in one of its comfy chairs or outside on the riverwalk. My husband and I appreciate the library so much, in fact, that we volunteer at The Ground Floor coffee shop there twice a month. (There's a ton of volunteer opportunities at the library, and I encourage anyone looking for a worthwhile way to spend their time to check them out.)

Meanwhile, all this talk about the library reminds me that I have two overdue books to return. Talk to you later!

We are so lucky - and spoiled - that we have such a great library - and now with the downloads available we are really fortunate
