All the single ladies

By ANN MARIE AMES ( Contact )   Wednesday, November 10, 2010 - 10:23 a.m.

If I wasn't reporting on it, I probably would take advantage of this great opportunity Saturday at Emmanuel Church.

The church's mens group is hosting a free car winterizing program for single women. It started as a program for single moms and expanded, I learned.

They will check and top off your oil, anti-freeze and washer fluid as well as check your battery and your wiper blades. What a nice way to make sure your car is safe for winter!

Call soon for an appointment. Here's the skinny:

What: Free car winterizing for single women

When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Where: Emmanuel Church, 4224 Whilden Court, Janesville.

For more information or to make an appointment: Call (608) 755-1450. Feel free to leave a message if no one answers. You will need to know your car's make and model and the year it was made.

True- I know many men who cannot change a light bulb.
I am wondering of it is more geared towards those who CANNOT afford to do an oil change?
I sure hope most know how to drive to a repair shop to have oil changed since they aren't doing it themselves still.

Why would that comment be removed? Do you have a 70 yr old nun screening these comments?

This is a joke, right? Because I'm too helpless to know how to do this stuff for myself? Open it to all, or drop it.

Sexism at its finest. No one should get special privileges and even then advertised for based on their sex, race or religion. Hello!!! Welcome to the double standard states of America!! But women were once discriminated against and treated as a lesser, so forever now they get special rights now. I really dont care... just think its stupid. All or none.

PLEASE don't just "top off the oil" IT needs to be changed. I hope they are changing it and you just used the wrong term.

Check your Differentials as well. They can be VERY dirty at only 12k.
Transmission fluid flush as well. I had a customer whos transmission broke about 150k. She was upset. I show people the maintenance book at delivery. I asked have you ever flushed the transmission? She said "what is that" Okay so NO. Transmission WILL break if you don't maintenance your vehicle. Another customer. Engine seized at 30k. She didn't know "you had to change the oil"??!!
Yep jiffy lubes(which I don't recommend" I have heard horror stories.) are just there for you to hang out at when nothing else to do.
Fuel system flush.
LOOK at your owners manual for all the maintenance your car needs and when. Some models are different than others.
If you do these things your car will last longer.

Check tire pressures too. Better wear on the tires and rotes every 6k(typical). Better fuel economy too.

BYW- the lady with the broken trainy HAS a husband.

Beth...good point. Maybe at some point in the future these generous guys would be willing to expand the program to help teach those willing and able to learn.

Thanks, JohnDenver -

In the story in today's paper, you will see it's free. I failed to put that detail in the blog. I will change that.

Hm. I have a different interpretation: single women can also be elderly widowed women. Maybe they aren't physically able to do the work, or maybe they have other limitations.
Just a thought...

li713...my thoughts exactly. IMO, single women (or women in general) should learn basic maintenance on their vehicle. My father refused to teach me because "you will always have me". Well Dad, you're no longer around and the last thing I want is to be stranded at the side of the road and wait for God knows who to come along to "save" me.

I'm sure that's the point that there's no cost but it's still a good idea to check. It's also a great idea to show women how to do this themselves. I sure know where all my vehicle's fluids are. They even have a class for it at Blackhawk Tech that my Mother once took. Winterization takes more than this anyways.

Not to bash a good cause, but how about instead of doing it for them, they take an extra few minutes and show them how to do it themselves. These things should be taught in driver's ed!
