Spring cleaning, facebook style
Ok, I am one of those deadbeat online friends.
I have been spending less and less time on facebook, usually just responding to people when they send messages or post something on my wall that demands a reply. ("Exxxcellent pic of Mr Burns!")
Someone will ask if I saw their status update from the day before, and I'll just look at them blankly.
"What? No, I didn't read your edict on monkeys working in your office, although I'm sure it's messy."
So I figured it's time to start deleting those people I just don't talk to. I was conservative about it: I kept people from my class in high school, people from work, and people I know I'll see sometime this year.
I started out with 247 at 6:26pm. I culled it to 221 by 6:44pm.
Granted, I decided to make lists as part of the spring cleaning. You know, organizing those people into categories, so I remember how I know them. It's also handy for privacy settings, since each group has a different level.
I admit, there was one girl I cannot identify. Based on mutual friends, she's someone from 4H. But with her married name I have no idea who she is. There are even two people in her profile picture, and I don't know if she's on the left or the right.
In general, I'm terrible at keeping up with people. But I figure if I'm not talking with them, why keep them on facebook? (The packrat in me keeps nagging that I might actually talk to them someday, and I shouldn't delete them just in case.)
But, still, it's hard to let go.
I'm still a member of Inappropriate Charms on a Goat? Fans of Aberforth Dumbledore.

Yes, I do the same thing... all the time, not just in Spring. Sorry, Beth, I think I de-friended you, only on FB a while ago. Email still works, doesn't it? If they really find the need to get a hold of me, they know how to "message" me or email, depending on who it is. Sorry, I don't keep EVERYONE I went to high school with...

I will clean mine out too! There are just a few I excepted because I didn't want make them feel bad because I don't remember who they are. Now I know an alert wont happen if they are deleted.

Rose-
They aren't notified. At least I hope Chelsea Handler, Ira Glass and Watchmen don't come after me after they realized I deleted their fan pages!
When it's *real* people, they just stop seeing updates. My theory is, if they weren't really communicating with you, they probably won't notice.
And, Becky, that sounds like a lot of work with the RSS feeds and stuff. :)

I'm new to Facebook, and immediately saw the lure of friending everyone.
But, since the only reason I started a FB account was to keep in touch with my sick sister, I was very good at friending only relatives and very close friends.
.
When you "unfriend" someone, how do they know? Do they get an alert? Do they just suddenly stop seeing updates from you? Or, is it only you who stops seeing their status updates?

On a side note,,,I *accepted* a friend from an email. I KNEW her name. It cost me 5 hours with a puter tech and $100.00 to get rid of the virus. I don't accept friends anymore. I very rarely go to FB anymore.

I have removed the "junk" by putting a facebook status update rss fead in my google reader -- If I'm intrigued or want to see more, great!
I can waste a lot of time on facebook, but now I check notifications 2 times a day at facebook.com, otherwise it's my reader!!

I delete people from time to time too, to many random musings I could care less about and they were burying the messages I would have cared to read. I was up toward 200 and now am happy at 102 and now when I accept one I look for one to delete.
