UPDATE: pet insurance costs
As I was sitting at my desk this evening, an unexpected call came from the executive director of the Elmbrook Humane Society.
She said a mutual acquaintance emailed her a link to my previous pet insurance blog and other information about Rory's health.
Well, gentle readers, it appears there were misunderstandings on both our parts.
She didn't realize I had spoken with the shelter's animal care manager after Rory's first vet visit. I didn't realize that while Rory had been diagnosed and treated for ear problems at the shelter, he didn't have a full medical check-up there.
She is giving me a refund of my adoption fees, which is very gracious of her. I think that's above and beyond in this situation.
Even if she hadn't, that wouldn't change my enthusiasm for animal shelters. They really do great work and deserve our support.
Here's a link to Elmbrook's website.
Here's another gratuitous pic of my dog.

I have heard from good sources that the Obama health care plan will also cover your dogs health issues. This includes existing problems that your dog may already have. Sorry, but the plan has no coverage for cats. The fine print does indicate that it is one dog per family.

It should be clear that shelter dogs have unknown medical histories and that the shelter is not responsible for medical costs -- you are not guaranteed a perfectly healthy dog.
.
We adopted a former stray with skin problems and it was very difficult to get her healthy. I can't imagine why we would blame the shelter. The skin problems came from lack of care before the shelter ever saw her.

Having adopted several dogs from the humane society over the years I do know they are not able to guarantee the health of the dog you adopt. However, in the case of your little guy it seems alot of his problems should have been addressed while he was still at the shelter, ie., worms, fleas, and mites for sure. It was nice to see that Elmbrook stepped up and reimbursed you and I'm glad you let it be known. The humane societies do an awsome job and some of the best dogs I've ever owned have come from them and this is just one more reason for adopting from them instead of buying from some puppy mill.

He's not quite ready for the dog park. His feet are bothering him a bit, still. But, we're working on it!

Is Rory feeling better? He's just about the size of my little one. Play date at the puppy park?

That is really nice of them!! A couple I know recently adopted from the ROCK County Humane Society, a wonderful dog who also turned out to be very ill. 2,500 dollars later and no help from the Humane Society he is slowly getting better! Kudos to Elmbrook for stepping up!
