Don't be That Caller
The hard-working folks in Janesville's City Services department take a lot of heat over the snowy weather. In fact, I'm planning a story later this winter manning the phones during a snow storm. I hear they get a lot angry calls during a storm.
So keep this in mind before jerk-dialing the Snow Hotline (click here for snow info if you live in Janesville).
--Don't expect plows to reach bare pavement. That's not usually the goal during a snow event.
--In fact, many times only the arterial streets are plowed.
--Which provides a good excuse to stay inside and stay warm.
--Even if the plows are out, it's probably a good idea to slow the heck down.
You're welcome.

If you absolutely need to be on the streets... then be prepared. Next year we will have winter also, and the year after and so fourth. People pay rediculous amounts to insure them, their cars, houses.. Why not invest in an automobile that will get you where you need to go and not get stuck? The cost is no difference than a car. You might not get as good of mileage but it IS WELL WORTH IT. Why? because you will make it to those appointments, make it to work, or any other matter. Its called "personal accountability". Not many people have it these days. Its always someone elses fault, someone elses problem... society is so sick.

Staying off the streets is an easy concept to grasp until you have to be to work, a doctor's appointment or some other matter that can't be put off until the streets are cleared. Believe it or not there are people who can't simply stay off the streets. It would be nice if life was simply that simple for all of us but in reality it isn't.

That is why they advise you to stay off the streets.... especially if you dont have a vehicle capable of driving through snow. Duh...its common sense. My vehicles cant go through the river because they dont operate under water. So you know what I dont do?? Drive them in the river. Its a pretty easy concept to grasp. :)

My only complaint is when the do the main streets(south Pearl) they block the side streets with the snow and every winter I have to be neighborly and push and sometimes shovel the poor saps that are now stuck in the pile of snow that they have to drive through or their is no way out...Sometimes these piles can be quiet deep and large depending on how much snow we have received...

I personally have never complained about snow removal. I leave that for the old folks with nothing better to do.

Sigma, don't go there. Some people just don't get how to drive when the pavement is dry in the middle of the summer. Why should they all of a sudden "get it" when there's white stuff and ice? Just sayin'...

If my little Honda Civic can drive in 8" of snow (albeit very slowly), I imagine most vehicles can.

Sshhh! Don't give them any ideas!

I would imagine that most people who live in Janesville, on average, are within a half-block at most either way from a street that has been plowed. If you can't make it that far on your unplowed street, then maybe you shouldn't be out driving in the first place. This is Wisconsin. This is winter and we all know that it snows and sometimes it snows a lot. The snowplow drivers are doing the best they can. Interesting how they can get to work driving on unplowed streets and they do that when it is dark, snow blowing and freezing cold out. They don't get the opportunity to stay home and be warm and comfy and complain because their street isn't plowed right after a snowfall.

Two of you mention you'd like it plowed in a "reasonable" time frame. What do you consider reasonable?

those are the days I use JTS...I can walk to a bus stop that will take me (worry free) to work (or currently, school) if need be. Some people just like to complain when they feel a little inconvenienced...in a storm, EVERYONE is a little inconvenienced-get over it or see a doctor for some happy pills, PLEASE. :)

Because Sigma not everybody wants to pay for that "extra" gas 365 day a year. Plus maybe not everybody lives 5 min from work (I work in Madison for example). Or maybe not everybody can afford the price or insurance of a 4x4 truck (they do get a premium price here).

Try again when you get a better argument. Until then I will expect the streets to be cleared in a reasonable time.

People should be prepared. That means have a vehicle capable of driving in the conditions you live in. Winter isnt new in WI. So it might cost a bit extra in gas to go places... but guess what? You'll get there. It can snow 16" and i'll still be able to get anywhere. I dont understand people saying they cant afford extra gas of a 4x4... A lot of good that hybrid does you when you cant get to work and make money. If I cant get anywhere it is nobodies fault but mine.

Last year, after we got about 8 inches of snow at once, it took 3 days for our street to get plowed. And, yes, I have heard that "only the main streets will get plowed." but MY main streets are the ones from my house to work. 3 days is ridiculous to have to "stay inside." I can't NOT work because my streets haven't been plowed. If I pay taxes for snowplows, I expect my street to be plowed in a reasonable time-frame. 3 days was not reasonable. Sorry for the negativity, but I hope this year will be better.
