A professionally refreshing event
Those of us hoping to connect with young professionals in Janesville got a big boost Tuesday night.
More than 100 people attended the first Young Business Professionals social event at the Speakeasy last night. Planners expected maybe 30, YBP committee chairman Nick Fitzgerald said.
There were those who said there aren't enough young people in Janesville for this type of event -- or at least none that want to network and socialize.
Fitzgerald said, "Hopefully we proved them wrong."
I was impressed with the turnout, and I think the other Off the Clockers would agree with me. We mingled and filled out surveys explaining what kind of events we would like to attend in the future and what we would like to get out of YBP events.
Socializing in Janesville is probably a little easier for me than my coworkers. Last night, for example, I was one of five members of my graduating class at the event. (Craig, class of 1994)
I tried to avoid talking only to people I knew, but when you're easing into a social situation, it helps to start by catching up with an old friend.
Hopefully as the events progress, more faces will become familiar. Watch this blog for upcoming YBP events.
The event was organized by a committee formed by Forward Janesville's Small Business Council.
By the way, the Off the Clockers were the LAST attendees to leave the Speakeasy Tuesday evening. (We stuck around a little to, ahem, support a local business.)
So don't be shy next time you see us! We're uber friendly.

We did prove them wrong. Thank you bloggers and GazetteXtra staff for your support. We have received a lot of positive input thus far from the event. The only glaring issue to the contrary was the heat. So, we're working on that. The committee is still working hard to compile the data from the surveys that were filled out. We will give an update regarding what we have found at the next event, which brings me to the next point. We are working on finalizing some of the details for the next gathering, and if you had put your email address on your survey, Forward Janesville will be sending you a date and time when we have an update. Also, if you were unable to attend the event but you would like to stay posted feel free to contact Forward Janesville. (608-757-3160)
I hope everyone will stay optimistic about what we are trying to do here. I feet safe in saying that the people I met at the event were likely people that I will be running into for the next 20 years as we strive for upward mobility in the community. There is clearly no shortage of us ,and with some positve input and a lot of energy, I bet we can make this an even bigger success. Thanks again for your support! Keep it coming, we aren't done yet!
