Del what now?

By Adam Bergstrom ( Contact )   May 7, 2008 - 7:12 p.m.

So, part of me wants to drive over to Del Taco, next to the new Menards on Milton Avenue, at about 2:30 a.m. tomorrow just because I can.

The more sensible part of me wants to stay in bed until my alarm goes off at 4. And he's gonna win.

But... I am curious about this new fast food spot that's sprung up just off the Interstate. I've never been to a Del Taco, though I did see them in California. So, one question remains, dear readers.

Is it any good?

I generally think I'm a healthy eater, who my colleagues say could even stand to gain a little weight (over my skinny dead body), so it's not like I'm going to be patronizing the place all the time. But I've got my weaknesses.

Now. At this point it must be said that I'm well aware that any sit-down Mexican restaurant in the nation probably is going to be better than this. I also have not forgot about how much I enjoy a trip to Qdoba or Chipotle. Those places are on a different plane of existence and cannot be compared to the lower orders. So there. Simmer down.

That said, let's imagine a continuum of Mexican fast food restaurants. In my head, at the higher end of this line is Taco John's, which made its return to Janesville last year. At the lower end, the well known Taco Bell.

(I'm not a fan of the Bell, but that might just be because I knew kids who worked there in high school, and they all hated their jobs.)

If you've been to La Bamba in Madison, that's somewhere in the middle, I'd say. So I wonder where our newest entrant will fall.

The whole 24-hours thing does bode well, though. Perfect for an after-bar (or an after-a-late-night-at-work) snack.

I do believe the now-closed Del Taco in Machesney Park folded because the franchisee had some personal issues. Like that he didn't want to be in the restaurant business anymore. I don't think it had anything to do with business or the location or anything.

Anyway, I'm just curious. Nothing holds a candle to my very favorite Mexican fast food of all time, though. We had a chain in Minneapolis called Zantigo's that got bought out by the Bell. They all closed when I was only 6 or so, but I still remember how good it was.

Then again, I suppose a 6-year-old is pretty easily impressed by anything that's not a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Good lord, 10 tacos! ;-)

I still haven't been there yet, but I'm working here in the Gazette newsroom tonight, designing tomorrow's front page, and I'm gonna need some dinner soon.

This might be the night.

I was at a Del Taco when I was out in San Jose a few years ago. I honestly thought they were way better then the bell. The taco's were smaller size then taco bell. I can put away a 12 pack of taco bell taco's. When I went to Del Taco I ordered a few burito's and 10 tacos. The taco's were the bomb but much smaller. The burito's were a little better to I thought. I went back and got 10 more taco's! Got some strange looks.

I was delighted to see Del Taco offers hamburgers and french fries. I was also happy they don't pre-sauce my tacos like Taco Johns does. (Someone else might prefer that, but not me.)

I talked to Al Utzig several weeks ago in hopes of doing another Oasis Cow story. He said it would be somewhere around May 20th. If you really miss the cow, you can drive to the Court Street strip mall across the street from Utzigs. From the parking lot, you can get a good look at, ahem, the south end of a north bound cow. :)

I heard someone asking about the cow in the newsroom yesterday, but I didn't hear an answer. I'll have to see if I can find out.

I just want to know when the big cow is coming back.
