A pastime I'll always enjoy

By Gina Duwe ( Contact )   May 5, 2008 - 12:16 p.m.

I've always loved playing volleyball. But having not played since high school, I was slightly worried about making a fool of myself when a former coworker asked me to join her summer sand volleyball team.

That was a couple summers ago. Now I play on several different indoor teams two to three nights a week, and sand leagues will be starting soon. While I fully admit I'm not a hard spiker or a great passer, it's the love of the game and the enjoyment I get out of it that keeps me playing and trying to improve.

For our readers who are looking for things to do or ways to meet people, this is a great opportunity. I've met a lot of great people and friends along the way...while doing something I love and getting exercise. Join an organized team sport in Janesville. Summer leagues for the city and bars are forming now, though the deadlines for most rosters already are past. Other city leagues include kickball, which has a registration deadline of May 16.

On Wednesday nights, an assorted group of Off the Clock bloggers and Gazette newsroom employees can be found playing on the city's co-ed indoor league. While you'll need an open records request to the city to find out our team record (lame reporter joke, please laugh), I think it's safe to say our team is in it for the fun, and the fun after the matches. Last week we hit up 31-cent scoop night at Baskin Robbins, and other after-volleyball outings have included taking advantage of Wednesday night bar specials and Wii playing contests.

So what's your favorite organized team sport in Janesville, and where do you play?

Help was always there when you had the brick behind you baby!
Hoops all the way for me. Grew up around it near the "hood" of Detroit. Played in high school and college around here. Now just play pick-up and some 3 on 3 tourneys.Don't think I know how to play any other game. Oh, and don't let that HUSSLER kiowamohican fool you. Should I tell the story of when we were in central park?

I am entering my 23rd year at Dawson playing softball, 28th year overall in the adult leagues. That still makes me only the fifth or sixth oldest on the team.

Considering I'm a very-very-backup player only used in dire emergiencies (and thus, never), I'm in it more for the after-game fun.

Just kidding. Actually, watching my fellow OTC'ers out on the court is pretty fun, even if I'm not the most avid cheerleader...

Gina is a volleyball goddess, don't let her blog kid you!

When I play volleyball, my favorite phrase is: "My bad", because I am always screwing up. When I play basketball my favorite saying is "HELP" when I play defense!
Ah well, it's all in good fun.
