First jobs -- Take two

By Ann Marie Ames ( Contact )   May 5, 2008 - 9 a.m.

Here are more first jobs held by The Janesville Gazette news room staffers.

Judging from the complete list, we could run a successful diner or drive-in up here.

That's a great idea! Let's tell Skip!!

“My first job was tickets/concession stand sales at Badger Theater in Stoughton, a single movie screen theater. I got a second job around the same time as a carhop at the A&W Root Beer Stand, also in Stoughton. It was back in the days when you had to figure change for a dollar in your head. But we didn’t have to wear roller skates.”

--Tracy Ndlovu, assistant news editor

“My first job was as a teller at a parish credit union in Milwaukee. I was 14. I had to fill out deposit slips and loan payment receipts by hand, and I worked on a computer older than I am—you know, the one with the black screen and green type.”

--Kayla Bunge, reporter

“Haying on my uncle’s dairy farm, then lawn mowing for others (we had a 12-horse Massey Ferguson tractor) and then stocking shelves at a liquor store.”

--Greg Peck, editorial page editor

"I got a job as a Gazette paperboy when I was 10. Rudy Frank was my boss. I made money for candy and Taco Bell, and it gave me something to do besides playing ding-dong-ditch and stealing golf balls from the country club driving range."

--Former Gazette reporter Dan Hinkel

“My first job was coaxing earthworms from the ground to sell for 25 cents a dozen to fishermen. We’d water all day. The poor things would crawl from their soggy homes at night. My siblings and I, armed with flashlights, would massage them out of the earth.”

--Marcia Nelesen, reporter

“I was 9 years old, picking up golf balls on a country club’s driving range. I made $1 a day; $1.50 or $2 on a busy weekend day; $3 on a holiday. I worked six days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and every holiday.

--Mike DuPre, reporter
