The state of the blog

By Ann Marie Ames ( Contact )   April 29, 2008 - 12:48 p.m.

The "Off the Clock" bloggers had a power lunch--on the clock, of course--to talk about how things are going with our blog.

Then we designed an action plan.

Impressive, I know....

Here are some excerpts:

--The point of this blog is to force us to explore events and places in Rock and Walworth counties and inspire others to do the same.

Are we doing that?

Yes. But not as much as we'd like to be. We make the excuse that we're busy. But so is everyone else. We're going to try to keep pushing to get out of our routine and find new things.

--One of the fears we had when we founded the blog hasn't materialized.

We were worried that "Off the Clock" would morph into a giant restaurant/bar review. After all, the inspiration was from a little something we wanted to write called "Why We Love the Main Street Saloon."

But that hasn't remotely happened. We have yet to blog about a single meal or night of revelry.

We're going to work to be better organized with our ideas and postings. In the meantime, are we missing anything?

Do you know of an event we should try to get to? Do you have a burning question you would like us to answer? Are you struggling with an issue that others might share?

We'd love to hear about it.

Maybe you should write about more of the everyday things that go on in your lives.
Events such as playing (or cheering for those who do play) rec league volleyball and the en masse trips to 31 Flavors might seem ordinary, but they are things that you do. So tell us about them.
That will show us what you folks are up to, as well as show that there is more to Janesville than the pub scene.

Irish_Mafia78 and others: I think our primary goal is to explore all facets of life in Janesville for those of us in our 20s and 30s (and to some extent, those who are older).

So that involves home, work, relationships, community, arts and entertainment. We're not really excluding anything. And while there are many people who don't have any interest in spending time in a pub, there are many who do, too.

That's why we have six people writing here. We're six different people; we're interested in different things, just as you are. Everyone should be able to take away something from our posts, but not everyone will be interested in every single post, and that's OK.

The point of the blog is to keep a balance between all of that, and I think we're doing a pretty good job. As the blog goes on, I think we'll get even better.

Ick. Pub crawling? Really?

How about finding the culture in Janesville that doesn't involve a primary trip to a bar?

I know, I know a BIG task for Janesville... but that's the point of your blog right?

The pub crawl would be fun. But I think you'd find that as we move from pub to pub to pub, our notes would start getting thinner and thinner, until we forget the blog altogether.

OK, not really. But in all seriousness, we really should write that "Why We Love the Main Street Saloon" post...

How about an organized pub crawl much like a guided tour conducted by an expert on the architecture and history of the buildings the pubs are in?
