Check Out Hedberg Programs

By JAMIE SWENSON   Thursday, September 8, 2011 - 9:07 p.m.

There is so much going on at Hedberg at the moment, that honestly, I’m not certain where to begin. So, I’ll just start with my favorite: STORYTIME!

We’re up and running with our ‘regularly scheduled programming’ - so that means you’ll find something good Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and some Sundays.

Mondays - LIBRARY EXPLORERS 3:30 p.m. for kids in grades K-5. This is a fun program for school-aged kids - themes change weekly as do the activities which vary from crafts, to games, to books (and more). No registration is required for this program. Parents and younger children can use this time to read, play puzzles, and enjoy the library together while the older kids are busy in the program.

Tuesdays - STORIES FOR 4S & MORE 10:00 a.m. for kids age 4 to 6. This storytime offers more complex stories, songs, and activities that introduce skills needed for school success. To help allow your preschoolers to practice their kindergarten skills without distraction, younger siblings are not invited to this storytime. This storytime lasts about 40 minutes - just the right amount of time for adult caregivers to search for their own books while the kids are in storytime or spend some one-on-one time with a younger child in the library. No Registration is required. (Of course, adults without younger children are welcome to join us in storytime)

*Wednesdays - BABY WALKERS 10:00 a.m.* for babies 13 to 24 months / BABY LAPSIT 10:45 a.m. for babies birth to 12 months I cannot tell you how brilliant this program is - it's a wonderful introduction to songs, rhymes, activities and stories - perfect for our youngest readers (and the big people who love them). This short program is followed by a casual playtime for baby / social time for caregiver. No registration is required.

Thursdays/Fridays - TALES FOR TWOS AND THREES 10:00 & 10:45 a.m. This is a spirited storytime for those smart little cookies - we keep them busy with songs, rhymes, stories, puppets - and pretty much anything else we can think of to keep their attention AND help instill a love of books/learning in these wee folks. No registration required.

Thursdays - TAIL-WAGGIN’ TUTORS Call to schedule a 15 minute slot between 4-5:30 p.m. Maggie the Lhaso Apso can’t wait to hear some exciting stories from our dog-loving readers - for kids in grades 1-5. Call 758-6585 to register.

Saturdays - SATURDAY STORY SHORTS 10 a.m. Want to come to storytime but don't have time during the week? This just might be the perfect program for you - a story, a rhyme or two, and a song - followed by a related craft. Perfect for the whole family - but aimed at 2-5 year olds with a caregiver. No registration required.

We also have many special activities planned - so check out the Hedberg Website for more information.

There are also tons of great adult programs coming up this fall … including a murder mystery - this is from the website:

Join us for an after-hours Murder Mystery party in the library! Saturday, September 24, 2011 7-10 p.m.

Murder and intrigue are on the menu at the second annual fundraiser for The Literacy Connection and Hedberg Public Libary. An interactive murder mystery game will feature local actors, great prizes, delicous food catered by Milwaukee Grill, a cash bar and an art auction.

Test your powers of deduction and guess who-dunnit to be entered to win a prize!

Tickets are $35 in advance and $45 at the door.

Tickets are available at the library, The Literacy Connection and Book World. Call 608-758-6594 for more information.

In the spirit of full disclosure - yours truly will be taking on one of the roles - as a suspect. Currently, I’m looking for the perfect outfit that shouts “I’m INNOCENT!”

There’s something for everyone at the library - hope to see you soon. Happy Reading -
