Burglary prevention
The Rock County Sheriff’s Office is investigating several residential burglaries. Deputies have increased patrols, and detectives are pursuing leads to catch the burglars.
The sheriff’s office provided the following tips to secure your property:
Ensure all doors and windows are locked. Be sure that the locks are working. Secure your home even when you are out for a short time.
Keep a record of the model and serial numbers of valuable items like televisions, gaming consoles, firearms, etc.
Keep your jewelry in a secure location such as a mounted safe. Keep a photo record of your jewelry so it can be identified if it is ever stolen and then recovered.
Keep your vehicle locked. Do not leave valuable items such as a purse, compact discs or other electronics in your vehicle. Take these items inside with you. If you must leave items in your vehicle, lock them in the trunk.
Protect your neighborhood. Burglars often park near their targets and approach on foot. Report suspicious behavior or vehicles to law enforcement. Be cautious of strangers.
Get to know your neighbors. Start a neighborhood watch program.

JoyM, here is a brief that I wrote a week or two ago about the burglaries:
The Rock County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a rash of nine burglaries to homes in Janesville and Fulton townships.
Capt. Jude Maurer said the burglaries started in mid-February and include at least three break-ins where residents were home.
Investigators believe the burglaries are linked to two men working together to steal electronics or money, Maurer said.
The burglars break doors or windows to enter the home, usually between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., he said.
When residents were home, the burglars asked for money and opened drawers, Maurer said. They haven’t displayed weapons or made threats.
The burglaries have happened in an area from Highway 51 west to Burdick Road, and from Miles Road south to Highway 14.
In one burglary, the suspects cut a telephone line before entering the home, Maurer said.
People should call law enforcement to report any suspicious activity.

Leave lights on when you're not home. The bad guys watch for dark houses. If you're worried about using electricity when you're not home, leave on a compact florescent (CF). A 60W equivalent CF only uses 13 watts. That's well worth leaving on for the protection it offers.
.
Motion lights on the outside of your house are a great deterrent also. I have four CCTV cameras on the outside of my house and a couple of months ago a couple of young guys came walking up to my house around 1AM. You should have seen them jump and run when the motion lights popped on. I never did know who they were or what they were up to, but at least they ran away.

Is there a way for county residents to find out if there is a general area or pattern to these break-ins? If such a map exists, if it could be published, possibly it would put the perpetrators on notice and maybe they would stop. Of course, they might just move to the next area, but it might not be as convenient for them to try to do that. Just a thought.
