The blotter

Forgive him

Police responded to a burglar alarm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Janesville. They caught a man coming out of the church.

He said he had just gone to confession and must have tripped the alarm. The priest confirmed his story.

Crop circles?

A woman reported vandalism along Willard Avenue in Janesville. Someone had sprayed weed killer in specific locations in her yard.

It looked like arrows and other symbols. It was expected to cost $500 to $700 to reseed the yard.

Man’s best friend

Dogs were kidnapped along South Holden Road in Orfordville.

A male English retriever and a female golden retriever with 11 puppies were missing.

The golden retriever and her puppies were found abandoned at a farm in Green County. The English retriever is still missing.

My parish is locked at night. Open Mass times and daytime are about the only times the parishes remain unlocked. Theft is not the only issue, vandalism remains an issue too. I agree, back in the day, churches of any denomination were left open so one could go in and pray or seek guidance from clergy.

The weed killer must be rather concentrated to kill grass. Suppose you are a senior citizen and not healthy enough to dig out the contaminated soil in your yard, and replace it with good soil, seed, feed, and water the areas of your lawn trashed by the weed killer? I wonder how much a landscaper/gardener/nursery would charge to repair a damaged lawn?
.
I'm sure the blowflies that vandalized the yard weren't bright enough to think about the labor and expense in repairing the lawn, or considered that someone living on Willard Avenue might be retired and living on a fixed income (or counting the days until their unemployment compensation ran out). I'm sure the lusers also didn't think about the dangers to pets or small children from residual herbicides in the lawn.

Didn't someone try to burn down either St. Mary's or St. Pats a few years back?

Isn't it incredible that all knowing Hannah can, after reading the three sentences of this article, determine the size of the yard, the damage done, and the materials and labor it would take to repair

Isn't she amazing?

Churches are prime targets for crime in this city. Most of the larger churches of all denominations are broken into at least once a year, often on Saturday nights when it is known there will be a large amount of money still in the building. The market for gold is the highest it's been in decades. A chalice would bring a lot of money. And yes just about every church is alarmed.

I am glad to see that the golden retriever and the 11 puppies were found. I was in such disbelief when I saw the flier around town that they had been taken. I truly hope they find the english retriever as well.

sannio, I would be surprised at any church that did not have a burglar alarm in this day and age. Most churches have computers, televisions, and other equipment, and something like a chalice is always going to be hard to trace.

Imagine how guilty you'd feel if police converged on you immediately after confession!

Forgive him: Churches have burglar alarms? I can see the Jehovah's Witnesses needing those sharp pointy spears all around their property, but burglar alarms at "regular" churches?
Crop Circles: Reseeding? Just wait until next spring, and it should grow back fine.

I'll bet that the guy did not say his penance prayers after confession! God is watching you!
