Rest in peace, cougar

JANESVILLE—His adventures stirred a mix of fear, curiosity and dozens of changes to The Janesville Gazette’s front page on deadline.

His passing was marked with sadness, relief and in some cases the collective rolling of many eyes.

We hardly knew the “Milton Cougar of 2008,” but his story will be told for years.

On April 15, Chicago police shot and killed a cougar in order to protect residents and pets on Chicago’s north side.

This week, blood tests revealed the cougar was the same one spotted near Milton in January. The cougar left tracks in the snow as he made his way east through Rock and Walworth counties all winter.

A series of private wakes are planned throughout the area as local residents reminisce the day their brother’s girlfriend heard a waitress say her dad spotted the cougar near the Illinois border in February.

In lieu of flowers, the cougar’s family asks you to be safe and be kind to an animal today.

Turns out the cougar was Irish.

Who knew?

Thanks, Chuck, for taking care of us as always.
