On Aqua Jays hosting Wednesday ski show

Excellent! I have felt so bad for their excellent organization over the past few years when we have had flooding. I hope they get to continue to hold their shows for the rest of the summer!

On Do you support a state law that allows teacher compensation to be tied to student testing?

Posted on August 24 at 9:23 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I can't imagine merit pay determined solely by a standardized test. In the business world, when an employee isn't following through, he/she is fired. Teachers don't get to fire a student when he/she does poorly. As a matter of fact, a teacher will work very hard to try a variety of methods to help a student and even then the student (and/or parent) doesn't always follow through on the plans made for his/her benefit. As for the comment about the students feeling as though they have the power to affect a teacher's pay by purposely bombing the test, this is probably frighteningly true. Teenagers are impulsive by nature and don't realize the consequences of their actions until it is often too late. Let's not put this kind of power in their laps and expect them to do the right thing all of the time; we just read an article last week about their driving habits on Milton Avenue during the weekends...

On Charms and quirks of fair can endear and entertain

The current cream puffs and e'clairs at the fair are the exact same recipe as Rollin Pin-- they are from Old Fashioned Bakery. As far as profits go, OFB gives the full profit to the 4-H organization for the whole week of the fair. Kudos to Old Fashion Bakery!

On Should Janesville continue to have a community Fourth of July festival?

Posted on July 17 at 5:04 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Thanks to all of the pro-fair comments; I was a 4-H'er, and it taught me a lot of life lessons-- cooperation, leadership, teamwork, volunteering, etc. There is no way it could be done in three days, and as for the entertainment, people are never happy. If they get a rock band, it is no good, if they get a youth-oriented band, it is no good, etc. etc. The fair board should be commended for all they are able to accomplish year after year. To get back to the original intent of the comments: Janesville should have a 4th of July event, but some group should step up to the plate immediately and begin to solicit funds for it. I hope some group can find success because the 4th is one of my favorite holidays-- always laid back, enjoyable!

On 23,000 chops on order for Porkfest

Actually, you are right; I heard it was a gift from the Budweiser Horses handlers who were appreciative of the barns and area to keep their prized horses in.

On Landowners upset about behavior on river

Tristanbru: Please don't think all Wisconsinites are awful or that we don't appreciate your enjoyment of our resources. The bottom line is that a few bad apples always, and will always, ruin it for the rest of the people. We can all attest to that at all of our work places and anything we enjoy doing. I think The Gazette did a respectable thing; they brought this problem to people's attention. Hopefully, those that are being irresponsible stop doing so, and those that are enjoying it responsibly continue to do so. From what I understand, you are in the latter in group.

It's great to see water back in the old lake. Kids are there everyday fishing. Also, the Evansville 4th of July parade is one of the best parades of the summer.

No; you get a whole meal. You can also purchase seasoned chops to take home & freeze for grilling later.

The Rock County Pork Producers are an excellent organization; everything they do benefits Rock County.
