On Bluebirds fall short of state

As a parent of a Bluebird defenseman - not sure if it's the ONE frog88 identifies - I would like to congratulate the boys on a nice season. I know it didn't end the way you wanted, but sometimes that happens. You won as a team and you lost as a team and I know none of you are making excuses. I don't like anonymous comments that are critical of young people working hard and trying to accomplish something. For those people who feel that it is appropriate to assign blame for a youth activity, I suggest you channel your energies to athletes who get paid to do a job, not kids taking part in an activity just for the love of the game.

On Bluebirds overwhelm Eastside Lakers

As a member of the hockey community, maybe hockey99 should have actually attended the game. Here's some facts, not that they seem to matter to some - first line of forwards and top two defensemen did not play at all the third period, the Lakers started a different goalie and his save percent couldn't have been over .500 and two other times this season the Lakers have been shut out while their opponents scored 12 or 13 goals - Verona and Kettle Moraine if you want to harass those players and coaches as well. Bottom line - the coaches did take action to prevent the game from being worse than it was. The Lakers are a younger, less experienced team and simply could not keep up. So unless you are telling your children to dumb down or not try as hard if they are working with someone not quite as smart or talented, please refrain from criticizing others who are simply doing their jobs - both the Bluebird players and the coaches. I'm sure both groups would have preferred a more challenging game in preparation for playoffs. Shame on you, hockey99, for showing some real pettiness.

On M&I might seek federal bailout

If I'm reading correctly, M&I wants bailout money not because it is losing money, but because it didn't make enough money for its investors. I know my investments have taken a hit. Who's going to bail me out? On the surface, this appears a little greedy to me.

On Higher sports fees in Janesville schools?

Call it an activity fee, make it $50 and charge it to everyone who participates in non-academic activities - music, athletics. It all goes to the general fund any way.

The WIAA rules on the website do not list specific penalties for specific violations. It is very discretionary.

JCK - I think this is much more innocent than you are suggesting. I don't think school officials knew - I believe that the business simply asked customers to help them with the billboard. And I believe the parties involved - the business and the athletes - did not know their actions were violations of any code. Doesn't make it right, but an unintentional action versus an intentional violation of rules may be an extenuating circumstance.

Rules aren't always rules. Sometimes they are guidelines - apologies to the writers of Pirates of Caribbean. WIAA uses discretion in following its published rules if situations suggest better options. Impose penalties, but base those penalties on the situation.

On Janesville athletes may have violated compensation rule

I visited the WIAA website to try to learn more. It appears that there is a large gray area around penalties. Hopefully that gray area will result in the WIAA reviewing intent, timing of the incident and all other pertinent factors, including the wisdom in penalizing teams for violations that occured in another season. Wouldn't a coach always be looking over his/her shoulder, wondering what could happen next? Seems like it would be easy for penalties to be punitive in nature, if careful thought is not given to each situation.

This is very curious. How are student athletes supposed to know the WIAA rules? Are they reviewed at a meeting/handed out? How does the WIAA decide what rules to enforce? WIAA rules for football playoffs said no game will start after 7pm. Didn't the Parker/Craig double header have Craig starting at 8pm? Can anyone shed light on how all this works?
