On What do you think of Janesville’s golf courses?

Milkman - respect your knowledge. Maybe I just don't see where that money goes? I saw carpet once. I sort of see a roof repair going on - maybe? A deck was a nice touch. Sort of updated bathrooms a few years ago I guess. Guess I was looking at necessary fairway applications - more than 1 a year. New mower blades or newer equipment instead of a full time mechanic repairing what they have. Tee box and greens applications. It's a miracle the course is in the shape it is - a testimony to the Greenskeeper and Mother Nature. I admit to playing a ton of golf - and I know you do also. I probably play 30+ different courses a year. You may also. All those course seem in better shape than Riverside but there isn't a track I'd rather play day in and day out than Riverside. I'll attribute this to Hans Wagner - "Tis Fine Land, That!"

Ok, so this is really not about Riverside specifically just your take on government in general and City government in particular?
I can respect that. Actually we should be happy with the City. They have been taking 10% off the top for 10 years, hardly putting a nickel back into the courses while Crown is left doing all the work and losing money while honoring their lease. You almost have to tip your hat to our City elders... till the well runs dry.

SuperDave - good post- I understand your tax angle but wards of the state? ( City) Look at everything the City supports already that generates little or no income ( or tax base ) for our City. Tallman House, Ice Arena, our parks, Dawson, Monterrey Park. All I'm saying is a viable golf course generates City revenue - not in tax form but certainly ( hopefully ) in profit. If the City would look at all these as income generators - we all win. The City is a business. They can generate income besides just raising our taxes. Income sometimes comes at the expense of investment. If the city doesn't care to help support what it now owns - then the easy answer is let it go to to the private sector. I do not advocate a city run course but I do advocate investment in what it owns, hire the stewards who know how to run it and the City - you and I can benefit.

We need to look at our golf courses, specifically Riverside as Businesses; as profit centers for our City. Golf courses bring people to our city. They spend money at our restaurants, our malls, our gas stations & our golf courses. Consider marketing "stay & plays" with Glen Erin, Prairie Woods or maybe even The Country Club wants in on the action. Get hotel involvement. Become a destination place to play ( and pay!) A clubhouse open year round with a restaurant benefits the community. Don't we need a restaurant in this city? What if the Elk's Club became part of the City and the course? Swap land for Elk's building elsewhere? The Clubhouse becomes a reception facility, a business meeting place not just just a clubhouse for golfers or a warming house for sledders and skiers. The potential and the revenue need to be studied. You still need a good product - a well maintained course that people will come to. You need money for quality maintenance. You need the right people to oversee our investment who understands recreational dollars and diverse customer expectations. Investment & marketing of Riverside will bring positive return. Ray Kinsella heard "If you build it, he will come." The city needs to hear "if you invest, we will come."

On Janesville city golf operations will change

Ok deep breath everyone. Crown Golf is looking to renegotiate a new contract AFTER the existing one is done at end of 2010.
The article leads you to believe Crown is trying to renegotiate 2010 but later it says "they don't intend to renew the lease in it's current form."
It will take 2010 to explore contract possibilities so would be improbable that Crown and the City would renegotiate a contract for a season that starts in 6 weeks.
You do not want the City running the golf course. A Management contract or a new contract with Crown or someone else is what we need to explore.
12% off gross was a sweet deal for the City. Most contracts work off net and for less percentage. Glen Erin and Prairie Woods are private owned so a whole different animal than Riverside GC.
As evidenced by the response by community volunteers recently, golfers and non-golfers willing to help with the winter damage, there is a lot of community support for Riverside and what it means for the residents of our City.
Just one example of what makes Janesville a pretty cool place to hang your hat.

Aside from the usual idiots that post nonsensical ramblings - there are a few good logical comments that are on point here.
Riverside GC has been around 100 years - darn near a historical landmark. Attractions like a quality school system, parks, public works are important to residents and people looking to move to Janesville. That includes quality recreational opportunities. We need to invest in that so we can reap that financial reward opportunity.
Riverside Golf Course is just such an attraction that generates revenue - and has the potential to generate much more revenue. How about a new clubhouse open year round that works as a restuarant and reception center? Buy the Elk's Club and we have upgraded substantially revenue opportunity.
Riverside attracts some of the finest amatuer golferes in the State including the annual Ray Fischer Tourney. Steve Stricker, Jerry Kelly, Skip Kendall, Tony Romo are just a few notable people who have walked those fairways.
Riverside is a gem that needs to be appreciated as quality green space that also generates more income than most attractions we put money into in this City.

On Wis. secretary to gather info on medical records

Posted on July 7 at 2:09 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Insurance companies "hacking" into medical records? This is nothing more then sharing records electronically instead of by paper upon written consent by a patient.

Sounds similar to what Epic Co. in Verona does across all of Europe and probably most of the US. Maybe they should invite the lady who owns Epic and created this great entrepenurial opportunity to this summit and all problems are solved.

On Wis. court: medical lawsuits came too late

Posted on July 7 at 2:02 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Ruling is perfectly fair and based on long established WI statutes.

What it doesn't say but some have mentioned is these folks likely have recourse against their attorney for potential malfesance or malpractice for allowing the statute to run.

Should have mentioned who "represented" them in this action for a little public awareness.

On Circus comes to Green Bay

So far all comments have not come from Farve but from hanger's on around him. All he said is he has the "itch" to play. Who wouldn't after 15 years. I did hear a rumor he was miffed that Ted T didn't ask him to come out of retirement when they visited recently. I say stay retired give Rodgers a chance. Also screws up our whole draft with alll those QB's we drafted on premise Farve is gone. Now if Bare hears Frave is going to Miami, I bet Bare jumps on board! ( Or ick,,, the Vi-Queen's.)

On Melvin: No plans to replace Gagne as Brewers’ closer

Posted on May 6 at 1:33 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I must agree with that "we are getting a lot of save opportunities" given the Brewers play is a true politicians turn of a phrase. I'm hoping we stay behind Gagne as fans and he responds. 410 mil for a closer is cheap and Cordero wanted $46 mil for a contract so he was WAY more expensive then to say $15 mil a year. We offered $42mil. Torres is not the answer. I'm no Turnbow fan but I do hate the way we drove him out of Milwaukee with the booing. It's tough but it would be great to cheer a guy when he's down and see if he would respond positively.
