On Field renaming upsets family

Doesn't it make more sense to set a good example for the children rather than their delicate little feelings? Its no wonder that so many kids walk around with that sense of entitlement attitude.

On Group proposing new city ice rink

I'm crossing my fingers that all this gets resolved and that we are fortunate enough to come out of it with a new facility. Even if this does mean a tax increase. Most of the negative is coming from people who have no use for an ice center. Thus the "I don't want to pay taxes on it" mindset. My family does not use the pools or parks here, or the bike trails or senior center, nor would they even have use for a skatepark. We are still paying taxes for all that kind of stuff. We will continue to pay taxes for them, even if we never use them. If more taxes is what it takes to have a decent arena then so be it. My family will finally have tax dollars going towards something we'll enjoy using!

SarahB1-My family is very involved in Ice sports and we really miss not having the ice arena open anymore. As taxpayers, my family and I are no happier than anyone else to see such an expense come during a tough economy. Tax increase isn't welcomed by anyone. We rarely use the parks, the trails, the pool, the senior center, and we wouldn't use a skatepark either, but the one facility we use on a steady basis is a dump. If my taxes go up because of this project, at least it is being spent on something we will use on a regular basis. Do I want my taxes raised? ~No. But after all these years we are finally paying for something we'll get use of.

SarahB1, I don't have an answer to your question either, but it is a good question and one that I thought about earlier when the first proposal was posted in the agenda. I questioned what would take place if the system went down after a contract was in place. Since the contract seems to primarily look out for the WHP, It would be my guess the city would be responsible for ice time elsewhere and also getting the repairs at home done pronto. Just guessing. On an optimistic (and hopeful) note, maybe the ice arena will get maintained better once we have a team here and a contract with WHP.
I can't beleive how neglected the facility has been over the years!

On Hockey team finds delay 'problematic'

Janesvillean makes a good point. The improvements should serve the arena well in addition to the hockey. The user groups and other citizens ARE concerned about the proposed improvements. If the team leaves and the arena is not user friendly because of the improvements, what is the community left with? If its true that the present "warming room" will become locker rooms, then it will leave no area for anyone to put on their skates. That means nowhere for parents to keep a watchful eye on their children skating except the cold unheated stands and nowhere for hockey parents or figure skating moms to gather & stay warm, chat and observe. What about Public Skate Sessions- they have nowhere to get skates on or keep their shoes. Maybe the plans will designate a new area for this...but it would be nice if the improvements would benefit any and all of Janesville's skating population.
