On Benefits will end in 2010 for many ex-autoworkers

Posted on December 21 at 9:52 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

It isn't GM bashing. I, like many others, are tired of hearing about the poor GM employees who lost their job. Notice in the article, many employees have spent 2009 with no job, but getting 95% of their pay. Now they are finally confronted with the fact that they need to go out and find a job. My cousin lost her job when the plant closed. Not only does she get almost her full pay, but she also is going to school for free. Yes, its too bad the plant closed, but the employees have been pretty well taken care of. How many other people out there who have lost their jobs this past year are getting 95% of their pay? Not many. Those are the people who deserve our sympathy

On Walworth County Fair might add beer tent

I was with the understanding that the land where the fair is held was donated for the purposes of the fair but the one restriction is that beer is not to be served on the grounds or Walworth County looses the land. Anyone know anything about that?

Hannah, "allegedly" has to be used because in this country everyone is innocent until proven guilty, even if there were a hundred witnesses...go figure

On Gay marriages expected to begin in Iowa April 24

Posted on April 7 at 10:21 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

copperguy, I should probably clarify my position a little. If you belive homosexuality is a sin, I respect that belief. The beauty of living in this country is that we have the freedom to choose a religion that suits our individual beliefs. However, I object to using religion as an argument against gay marriage because marriage is not a religious instutition. We have thousands of people in this country who are unemployed, have lost their homes, or lost their entire savings in the stock market. In the grand scheme of things, I think we have bigger problems to be focusing on right now instead of trying to legislate who people fall in love with.

It amazes me reading all of these posts and the diversity of opinions. Some people went from gay marriage to murder, incest, and bestiality. Don't see a connection there. How is it that 2 gay people getting married diminishes my marriage? Do people really think that it will completely collapse society if made legal? And to all the arguments that homosexuality is a sin.....marriage is a LEGAL institution, not a religious one. Many people choose to get married in a church for whatever the reason, that doesn't make it a religious issue. I was married in my parent's house by a court commissioner and it was not legal until the license was signed and filed with the local court house. So I guess in the eyes of religion, I'm still living in sin because I wasn't married in a church.

On GM to end 'jobs bank' Monday

Boy, with Joker's big head in this discussion i can't believe there is any room for posting. Joker, I wonder how everyone can be jealous of you when nobody knows you??? And it amazes me that you know everything about every subject. Must be such a burden to be all knowing. Back on topic, I believe everyone has a right to their own opinion and can say whatever they want. GM closing is sad but thousands of people are losing their jobs everyday and they don't have 48 weeks of pay coming to them. Those are the people we should feel sorry for.

On UAW grants concessions, exec warns of depression

localboy how can you blame the Democrats for the greed of the UAW? The union wanted everything for the employees, sending costs through the roof, and continuing to build gas guzzlers that nobody was buying. The crisis of the auto industry is mostly their own making. Yes the economy has tanked and people aren't buying cars. However, laid off employees of GM in Janesville will be collecting almost 100% of their salary between unemployment and the supplemental pay they get. They will be collecting these salaries until the contract is up which I think is in 2010. You certainly can't blame that on the democrats

On Last look at the line

It's nice seeing all of you bickering back and forth like my children. What nobody ever talks about is what is really going to happen to GM employees. Yes, they are losing their jobs, and that is sad, however, they will be getting almost full weekly pay, without working, until their contract is up, which I believe is 2010, but don't quote me on that. I have a friend that has worked there for years and she is going back to school to get a degree. Did I mention that she is getting almost $50,000 from either the State or GM (not sure who is footing the bill for that) to pay her tuition? I sure wish I could spend the next 2 years getting full pay, not having to work, and having someone pay my tuition to get a college degree. Yes it is sad, but don't make it sound like all these employees are going to be on the streets begging for food because I don't see that happening for a while.

On Are kids at school too early?

Posted on October 29 at 2:40 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I remember when I was in middle school, we would have about 20 minutes each morning to walk around the hallways to visit with friends before school started. Now, students are not allowed in until 5 minutes before class starts. As far as the bus thing, we live 1.3 miles from the school and my kids are scheduled for pick up in the morning 35 minutes before school starts. They would be on the bus for about 25 minutes to go 1.3 miles. That is just insane. I am fortunate enough that I can take them to school before I go to work. Parents, if you have that opportunity, take it. With as busy as everyone is these days, I love spending that 10 minutes in the car with them in the morning. Sometimes that is about the only uninterrupted time I get.

On Delavan Pick 'n Save closing doors on Nov. 2

With the economy the way it is, I shop to save as much as I can. I never buy meat at Walmart because they never put it on sale. I buy most of my groceries there because I can save $20-$30 per grocery trip compared to other stores. As far as everything being made in China, Walmart carries most of the same items that Shopko does, and it is cheaper. Are you all saying that Walmart stocks Tide laundry detergent that is made in China but other stores don't? If you are really concerned about buying American that's your right, but don't generalize that all Walmart's products are made in China when they are not.
