On UAW grants concessions, exec warns of depression

Posted on December 4 at 9:23 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

localboy how can you blame the Democrats for the greed of the UAW? The union wanted everything for the employees, sending costs through the roof, and continuing to build gas guzzlers that nobody was buying. The crisis of the auto industry is mostly their own making. Yes the economy has tanked and people aren't buying cars. However, laid off employees of GM in Janesville will be collecting almost 100% of their salary between unemployment and the supplemental pay they get. They will be collecting these salaries until the contract is up which I think is in 2010. You certainly can't blame that on the democrats

On Last look at the line

It's nice seeing all of you bickering back and forth like my children. What nobody ever talks about is what is really going to happen to GM employees. Yes, they are losing their jobs, and that is sad, however, they will be getting almost full weekly pay, without working, until their contract is up, which I believe is 2010, but don't quote me on that. I have a friend that has worked there for years and she is going back to school to get a degree. Did I mention that she is getting almost $50,000 from either the State or GM (not sure who is footing the bill for that) to pay her tuition? I sure wish I could spend the next 2 years getting full pay, not having to work, and having someone pay my tuition to get a college degree. Yes it is sad, but don't make it sound like all these employees are going to be on the streets begging for food because I don't see that happening for a while.

On Are kids at school too early?

Posted on October 29 at 2:40 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I remember when I was in middle school, we would have about 20 minutes each morning to walk around the hallways to visit with friends before school started. Now, students are not allowed in until 5 minutes before class starts. As far as the bus thing, we live 1.3 miles from the school and my kids are scheduled for pick up in the morning 35 minutes before school starts. They would be on the bus for about 25 minutes to go 1.3 miles. That is just insane. I am fortunate enough that I can take them to school before I go to work. Parents, if you have that opportunity, take it. With as busy as everyone is these days, I love spending that 10 minutes in the car with them in the morning. Sometimes that is about the only uninterrupted time I get.

On Delavan Pick 'n Save closing doors on Nov. 2

With the economy the way it is, I shop to save as much as I can. I never buy meat at Walmart because they never put it on sale. I buy most of my groceries there because I can save $20-$30 per grocery trip compared to other stores. As far as everything being made in China, Walmart carries most of the same items that Shopko does, and it is cheaper. Are you all saying that Walmart stocks Tide laundry detergent that is made in China but other stores don't? If you are really concerned about buying American that's your right, but don't generalize that all Walmart's products are made in China when they are not.

On Dead zones: Cell service lags at big box stores, customers say

Posted on September 15 at 1:44 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Well said Mark....people think they are so important that they must be on their cell phone all the time, thereby being rude to everyone else around them, because they aren't paying attention to what they are doing. Sometimes I get a call while at a store, but I never talk more than a minute or 2. There is nothing I hate more than having to wait in line at the checkout forever because the yoyo in front of me is so busy talking on their cell that they can't unload more than 1 item at a time from their cart.

On Poverty's punch: Stress, uncertainty haunt children in poverty

I'm gonna take a lot of grief for this comment but here it goes. She had an "on-again off-again" relationship with this guy who sometimes beat her. Yet she had 4 children with him in 5 years, and the article doesn't say anything about them being married, so the taxpayers of this state are going to be the ones supporting this family. My heart goes out to families who struggle to make ends meet. With the economy the way it is these days, that is becoming more difficult for many families. But you have to make sacrifices for your family and it doesn't seem like she is sacrificing much. Also, I have 2 dogs, a cat, and lizard and I spend less than $75 per month on them.

On Permitting underage children to drink at home is a question of parenting, not the law

Posted on July 3 at 12:03 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

To the people that think allowing underage kids to drink is sending the wrong message, I think that is kind of a broad generalization. Occassionally letting your underage child have a drink at home is not sending them the message that it is ok for them to drink regularly. Parents need to make it clear to the kids that an occasional drink at home is different than going to a friends party and getting drunk. The kids that do it regularly are the ones who probably don't receive guidance from their parents. But on the flip side, kids know it is against the law to drink before age 21......they just don't care.

On Janesville's GM plant to close

Posted on June 3 at 11:59 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I hope people do realize the impact this will have on the area. Janesville relies heavily on income from GM workers. I hope the powers that be come up with some good ideas for keeping the city afloat. As far as the employees, there are many who are smart enough to know that someday this was coming and planned ahead. However, the problem is going to be the ones who had to have all the "toys" in their yards and driveways, and are now facing the possibility of losing everything because they figured the union would always protect them and they would always have a job. I'm curious to see how the UAW is going to handle this. Does anyone know if they can step in and try to stop the plant closing?

So Janesville, it is ok to drive under the influence as long as nobody gets hurt????? I can't believe anybody would have the nerve to say that.

On Four students expelled

Posted on May 14 at 2:08 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Just because "half the school" is using alcohol and drugs, doesn't mean they should get away with it. If half the student body is expelled, maybe incoming high schoolers will think twice about the choices they make. There are students who fight peer pressure every day and win. That should not be used as an excuse for poor choices.
