On Rhinelander students protest layoffs

Rhinelander, Burlington, Oconomowoc, Lacrosse, Milton---in these and scores of other school districts across the state, even though the staff have conceded significan cuts in compensation, the districts are still laying off staff. Class sizes are increasing and programs diminishing. Walker's draconian cuts in education funding are hurting kids and communities--you need only speak to the folks work in the school buildings to find out.
On Appreciating teachers this week

Thanks, Steve. This past year many folks have been emboldened to denigrate teachers in anonymous blog postings and other media, and thus your words are very welcome. As a former teacher, and current union representative of educators, I know how challenging the job is. I appreciate the efforts of my former teachers who put up with me, and of the people I represent now who have dedicated their lives to kids and the community.

How ironic--that the first Wisconsin Governor to establish a criminal defense fund; who hired six individuals indicted for fifteen charges (including child pornography and embezzlement); who has broken video-taped promises (that he would keep education funding "intact", and that he would "negotiate" with unions); and who has about an 80% lying rating from the non partisan Politifact, once again leaves the state and tells others how they should conduct themselves.
On Milton School Board OKs $1.1 million in budget cuts

The vast majority of Wisconsin kids suffer from attending school districts that have endured cuts--this is a fact. The Maciver institute and other propaganda outlets may allege otherwise, but political spin cannot hide reality. Just in recent days, Rhinelander, Manitowoc, Burlington,Kenosha, Oconto Falls (as well as Rock County schools) announced additional cuts for next year. I am concerned for the future of education not only as an educators' union representative, but also as the parent of two kids about to enter the public school system. Our education system is the foundation of their, and our state's future. It saddens me to see that foundation undermined.

Sadly, Milton, Janesville and other Rock County schools are not alone in education cuts. In the current school year the vast majority of Wisconsin students attend districts that reduced staff, and the bulk of those schools will make further cuts next year.(see http://dpi.wi.gov/eis/pdf/dpinr2011_127.... ) The Governor's education budget is "working," only if one believes that increased class sizes, reduced program offerings and other reductions in education quality are appropriate.

While I also applaud the fine efforts of Janesville's great teachers, as the parent of two small children about to enter the public school system I share the concerns of "nonprofiter." Excessive testing can cause: increased children's anxiety; diminished creativity in lessons; teaching to the test; reduced content learning in favor of test preparation; sacrifice of non tested subjects; and an overall reduction in the richness of kids' educational experience. Those who call most for increased testing, ironically, are millionaires (e.g., Bill Gates) who would never subject their own kids to such a regimen.

How cowardly--to accuse schools of a "Marxist globalist agenda" along with other nutty allegations, but do so anonymously! Will the author take responsibility?

School District taxes have declined dramatically in recent years. In 1993, Janesville residents' school total taxes were $33,572,583, and the taxation rate was 18.43. Now,almost twenty years later, Janesville residents' school total taxes are $36,774,828 and the taxation rate is 9.92. Inflation adjusted, school taxes have declined by more than thirty percent.

On Walker releases more positive jobs numbers

Wow--you can't make this stuff up! Unhappy that he has presided over the greatest jobs loss of any state in the country, the Governor tosses out the jobs calculation method used by every other state in the country, and comes up with his own! As absurd as this is, I wonder if the general media will report this attempt to change facts for what it is.
