On Small-scale ShopKo proposed in Brodhead

Posted on January 1 at 11:41 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I am leaning towards supporting this for our town. I think the 17 full time jobs is a plus and there should also be part time jobs made available as well. As for the mighty Mayor's concern, although he may be concerned about the other businesses in town, I believe his concern is personal. He owns the only pharmacy in town, a monopoly so to speak in our fair town. To buy any item other than a prescription, in his pharmacy, be prepared to pay a great deal more than if you did go to another store such as Shopko, Walmart, Kmart or even Walgreens! It's the convenience factor at play, so if you don't want to drive 15 minutes to Monroe, you pay his price. Maybe he will have to become more competitive in his prices if this store is built and will have to earn his money in a more fair way instead of raking his constituents across the coals at the checkout! Just my opinion! Let's get the Hometown Shopko in Brodhead and provide some incentive for growth!

On BTC considers cutting aviation program

Posted on November 4 at 4:29 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I think it's a shame that they are considering cutting an entire program such as the Aviation one! That is an excellent course which has been full to capacity the last couple years. People in the program can go many places to find work after graduation. Why not cut back on some other courses or limit the amount of specific classes, instead of cutting an ENTIRE program. I think this is just a shame!!! And shame on the 'powers that be' for even considering this!!!

On Do you support the Occupy Wall Street protest movement?

Does at least ONE protester on Wall street realize that Wall Street is made up of Democratics? IF you say, "No it's NOT" then do your homework!!!

It's the blind leading the blind waiting for a handout. Whatever they do, do NOT go get a job. Just wait for someone to provide you with what you feel you are entitled to! Morons!

On Attendance nosedives at annual AirFest event

Posted on September 14 at 9:17 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

KangarooJack: The Brazilians cancelled due to costs and and not enough in their budget to travel here. AirFEST did not change their date until they were notified by the Brazilians of their inability to attend. Date was then changed knowing that that late in the air show season, the show would be weak and competing with the fair would have been more disastrous that the show was.

Chelleandlou: "
Really? Combine the fair and airfest? First of all how would that be done? Kids will want to be at the fair not airfest and don't forget the fair affects hundreds of rock county youth, parents, and vendors. I doubt AirFest is a nonprofit. 4-H and FFA are both nonprofit organizations and provide youth with a variety of skills they will need in their adult lives such as management skills, public speaking, time management, budgeting, leadership, teamwork, etc. These organizations provide a significant foundation for the future leaders of this nation; Airfest doesn't teach them anything."

As a matter of fact AirFEST is a non-profit 501c3. It is the largest fundraiser for Wisconsin Aviation Academy a non-profit 501c3 that teaches area high school students to fly and receive their private pilot license for FREE. IT teaches communication, discipline, problem solving, responsibility, aerodynamics, weather, calculations beyond what you can imagine, just to name a few. Students aka Cadets, need to maintain am minimum C average in school, stay out of trouble and attend flight lessons a minimum of 2 days a week. These students are flying a $100,000 aircraft alone. They are learning a lot and they are actually building a future as well.

I disagree with joining the Fair and AirFEST, that just makes no sense, but please before cutting an entity, please do your homework. Thanks

I remember the Hollywood on Kellogg and also Chips. Really miss the old Roherty's on Court Street and the Steak House with good ole John Lee cooking! Best tenderloin in town.

And....when Farm & Fleet was at the 5-Points. Always smelled like horse saddles...

The bird at Ben Franklin on Court Street, known then as The Five & Dime

Also remember when there was NO Mall! Then when they built it they never removed the dirt hill and now it's a sledding park.

And,,,,What about the Circuit (downtown) So much fun!!!

Jams at the YMCA (when Cheap Trick was our band that was playing, obviously before they got "big")

I worked at Geri's through my entire high school years! We had a blast working there and yes, I loved the double cheese burgers!!! Sure miss the place.

I remember:
Larry & Phils
Frost Top (the big root beer mug on the roof)
Grants Dept store
Scots then later, BelScots
Kinny Shoes
Campbells bar on Milton Ave
Clark gas station where Jim's Pizzera is now
Woolworths and the soda fountain there too. Great hamburgers there too & french fries!
Sears when it was downtown across from Woolworths
The King's Pub!
Ice Skating at Traxler, with the Hockey box, speakers on the light poles, and "security" people skating with orange vests!
Party's at Riverside park! (sometimes during school hours)
The Outdoor theaters, Mid-City and the one on Milton Avenue about where Sikers is now. (That was country, in fact, KMart was in the country when it was first built!

Mamie's
Swanson's grocery store (By Geri's)
Drive up windows at the 2 Cronin's bar & liquer stores
The Army/Navy store
Holiday Gas station, where you could buy a bike, waterskiis or a shotgun

And the list could go on and on.....

On Rock County 4-H Fair and AirFest coincide this year

Posted on April 17 at 7:09 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Belman, you should get your facts before posting for all the public to see. It truly does not become you to post such a factless point. Ms. Hendricks is not on the AirFEST board of directors, nor is she an organizer of AirFEST. ABC Supply (Not Ms. Hendricks) is a major sponsor. That means they donate an amount of money to have that title. It is just a fraction of what it costs to put on an airshow. The board of directors & executive director (read the article, his name is mentioned) are the ones who plan when, who and how for the air show. You obviously have some hostility for those who are successful as you posted a most hateful remark about a woman who's done nothing but good for the Janesville/Beloit area. Please educate yourself before posting such ridiculous comments.

On Walker would undo birth control law

Posted on March 3 at 11:28 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Come on! This law he is repealing just went into effect last year! Did you even know it went into effect? What do you think the people/women of this state did before it was law? Have you seen an enormous decline in unwanted births since last year? Come on people! Stop arguing just for the sake of arguing. Use your energy in a more productive way. Most posting here are against Gov. Walker, so use your energy to come up with a better plan to fix our budget, since you all feel he's an idiot, then come on, genius, come up with a better plan.

On Missing Democratic senators now face fines

Shame on you who believe Gov. Walker is doing wrong by the state. If you think in this economic climate, it's business as usual and things will rectify themselves, you are ignoring the facts right in front of you. The entire nation and most individual states are broke and need to take drastic measures to fix. What the Gov. has planned may be hard on all of us and each city, school and county, but it is the only way to fix our ever increasing debt. We can not continue to operate the way it's been done in the past. Do you really want to pass this on to your children to contend with? Anyone who has managed their own household, lost a job, took a pay cut or over extended themselves know that you have to make many unwanted decisions and cutbacks, but the only way to dig out is to make and follow those decisions. This is what he's doing only on a much grander scale. Common sense people, please use it!
