On Should the Janesville City Council support construction of a new ice arena or spend money on the existing arena?

"Perhaps if the city was more progressive, and we had more to offer in terms of business, entertainment and quality of life, more residents would move here and share the tax burden. I personally don't think not doing anything for the community is going to get us anywhere. You have to spend money to make money. If we leave our commnunity as it is, youre right, you won't be able to sell your house, because nobody will want to move here. Most people are willing to pay higher taxes to live in a nicer community...."

The role of a city is not to "make money". The City of Janesville is not a here to entertain you or me. They have all they can do to plow the streets and supply water with enough pressure to fight a fire while the neighbor takes a shower. Hockey1, your opinion is heavily biased. Plus, we would not have enough money for tunnels, childrens museums, and parking ramps if we built a new arena. :D

On Milton council short one candidate

Shocker! Smaller than what? Milton has just as small of government as any other city it's size. In fact Department of Public works is about 1 person short of where they should be, and it's Police Department ran on 2-3 shy of the needed officers for nearly two years. They did not fill a clerical position last year instead spread the duties over an already taxed (pardon the pun) group of hard working ladies. Nancy works her butt off and does more than most workers you or I know. The Council is what makes up your "government" and they are normal size and under-compensated by today's standards. The EMS and Fire Department is a shared entity and is very efficient. In fact they cover many costs the average person never hears about through fundraising. What other "government" needs to be smaller? They have no Parks or Recreation program. The water department is a function of Public Works, and the sewer treatment plant is run by one man and an assistant from DPW. Trash collection is done by Waste Management for a fee that is added to the tax bill each year. Maybe you shouldn't consider a council bid. You obviously do not know what you are talking about and shoot from the hip. Wait, there is the Library that could be cut right? Those girls work under the direction of the Library Board for about 65% of the national average wage for Librarians or Asst. Librarians. There are always things to cut, but "government" size is not really much of an option unless you are willing to plow your own streets, pick up your own trash, send out your own tax bill, and mow the park down the street from you. I don't know how you would do that since you spend nearly all of your time on the computer whining.

On Plans on schedule for new hospital

newsread5, you are so far off it is not even funny. Edgerton serves a niche market, and provides local care for those that need it most. Look at Mercy for example. They take away services that the locals counted on. Saying there is no need for Edgerton's Hospital is like saying Fort Atkinson, Stoughton, and all of the clinics scattered all over the area by Dean and Mercy are not needed. Obviously they have a need. Obviously they make enough money to survive. The fundraising allows them to compete with the regional hospitals on an operating cost basis alone. If you pit the small hospitals against the Mercy's of the world they stand no chance at all. Is that what you want? Since when is a lack of competition good for anyone other than the provider? No one forced you to give. This is not a City of Edgerton project, so you can take comfort in knowing your other, more important things can still be planned. Then again, maybe you are trying to interject your personal opinion of where other peoples' placement of charitable funds should go. If that is the case why not lead the way, and let other people decide what interests them. At least people are making donations in this economy. Let's not knock anyone's donation to any cause. What is important for one person is that person's choice. Respect the fact that a great many people are dis-satisfied with Mercy.

"And don't you worry warts worry about how much time I spend with my kids, I am a spoiled princess that doesn't have to be away from my house for 40 plus hours a week, so those hours you neglect your kids AND dogs, I am sitting comfy with my kids, computer and soaps....yep, I know your all jelous!!"--optimism

Jelous? You mean Jealous? You have us pegged. We are jealous all right. I bet your kids think highly of your soap watching, playing on the computer and conducting repetitive daily affirmations to convince your inner-self of your "princess" label is quality time. You should think about adopting a dog from the humane society. At least they would have someone to spend some true quality time with while you are preoccupied flaunting your "princess life" to us. Soon your children will go to publically funded schools that we all pay for through taxes. When they get to school, our tax-supported teachers can correct the years of damage create by allowing your children to see you use coordinating conjunctions to start 50 word, run-on laden sentences meant to trash a good project.

Negative0neWithTooMuchTimeOnHisHands, aka Optimism, you are up to averaging 3 posts a day now. 2 posts a day for 4 months straight is excessive! It is the same as 150 posts over the course of 2 days or 300 on one. Remember, that is only the average if I we assume, for your benefit, that you post every day for 120+ days. Spend some time with your kids and stop ruining a good thing for the other 50% with dogs.

Optimism does not have time for crosswords! He is on the computer 24/7. He posted 301 times in 146 days (since March 20, 2008). That averages 2 per day, every day, for nearly 4 months straight! After an exhausting read of his most recent 20-30 comments, Optimism has officially been been given a new name. He is not allowed to post under the misleading name Optimism anymore, but instead will be known as Negative0neWithTooMuchTimeOnHisHands. O'tay Buckwheat?

Ask11, that was excellent!
