On Janesville School Board will have to swallow more cuts or raise taxes

Posted on August 24 at 7:34 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Can someone explain to me why my tax money is going to fund kids playing sports at school and why this is considered untouchable? I would think that something that doesn't directly add to the education of children should be the first thing on the chopping block.

On Wisconsin teachers' union announces layoffs

In the end, a weaker professional organization leads to a weaker profession. The media and conservatives have led people to believe that all unions spend their money on is political causes. sure they do, but that's not all they do. What professional organization doesn't spend money on lobbying? If the (non-union) professional organization I belong to wasn't involved in lobbying and supporting political causes to help strengthen my profession, I'm not sure were I would be. Groups like WEAC and NEA also produce professional publications and journals, sponsor continuing education course and conventions for teachers, and provide resources to help teachers better themselves and their profession. Make this political all you want, but in the end, this, just like Gov Walker's "tools" will hurt education.

On Would concealed carry have helped or hurt at State Fair?

This argument is stupid. There are 48 states with CC and I would guess none of them are crime free. The thought that criminals are going to "think twice" about the possibility of someone carrying a gun is ridiculous.

If a law-biding citizen had pulled a gun on the mob of 100 or so idiot at the fair, what are the odds that one or more (many more) of the mob is carrying guns? How many more serious injuries or fatalities might we have been faced with in this situation?

I'm not against conceal carry. I think had guns been drawn in this situation it could have made a bad situation much, much worse.

On Recount: Conservative Justice Prosser won election, as expected

So in the end, there were over 1000 MORE total votes cast according to the recount than in the initial count. That means that over 1000 people's votes were not counted in the initial count. No matter who the votes were for, I thought we were supposed to have elections where "every vote counts." Instead of spending 7.5 million on instituting confusing voter id and residency regulations, why not put some money into creating a system that doesn't routinely miss votes?

On Janesville school sports, parking fees may go up

Posted on March 29 at 8:31 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Why should taxpayers have to spring for this as part of school taxes. If the cuts that are proposed to school districts go through, absolutely the first thing to be cut should be things that have no relationship to education whatsoever. Furthermore, why should athletes in certain sports get significantly discounted rates to play their sports through the school, while other, while athletes in other, less popular sports have to pay to play in private leagues or organizations? I know sports are a source of school pride, but they are expensive, and I doubt the athletics fee that students/families pay does much to cover the true cost of the athletics program as a whole.

On Officials disagree over publication of law

@in_my_opinion: you are correct, the TRO was specifically for the secretary of state. So the TRO wasn't violated. But since the state constitution stipulates the the SoS publishes laws, not the Legislative Reference Bureau. So if anything, not a TRO violation, but rather a violation of the constitution. Either way, it's desperate.

I've never had a restraining order against me, but I'm pretty sure if I violated it, I'd be in jail.

On Edgerton reaches teacher contract

What are these "new tools" that are on their way? The board and union made a deal that keeps the school district's budget balanced, with a provision to make adjustments as needed. The teachers agreed to increased contributions to pension and insurance, and will not be getting raises. They are not going to have to lay off any teachers or other staff members. Property taxes in Edgerton will not be going up due to this. Not sure what "tools" are needed beyond what was done in Edgerton. Kudos to the board and employees.
