On Data sought on Janesville School District buildings

You're kidding right? A geothermal system retro-fitted to an existing building is going to cost five to ten times as much as replacing an existing system. You can pay through the teeth have test drills and soil analysis' done and, at best, see 35 years out of retrofitted geothermal (new construction is a different story). A well maintained boiler system will easily give you that.
What exactly kind of engineer is Ardrey anyway? Obviously not mechanical. I'm guessing architectural, since he mentioned looking at buildings "architecture". Unfortunately, not a structural engineer. Sounds like Greg is trying to LOOK smart (and the other two board members were like "...Ahhh yes, GEOTHERMAL!"). Give me a break.
If they want to save some money, why not try doing a power factor correction analysis? Might p.o. Alliant though. In the mean time, probably just listening to the maintenance supervisor would work. He probably knows more about the buildings' systems than some "engineer", having actually HAD some hands-on experience.
Let's just cut a few more teaching positions to pay for Ardrey's "great" idea. The guy votes down GAT, and comes up with this? Think harder, Greg.

(whoops)... and not to mention the $20 million in credits and loans from the-artist-formerly-known-as-the Department of Commerce, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation... for a grand total of...(drum roll)...$250,000 per job. Great deal.

Article mysteriously leaves out the $120 million in tax incentives from the state, not to mention the free land transfer, not to mention the $6 million from the city of Superior...nearly $130 million for 600 jobs?

Hey Karl, since you're on here, what percentage of the Fund 10 balance is made up of district employee premiums?

Listen, I usually don't post on here, unless it's to see how long a direct insult will remain before it's removed, but: SantaFe, the Fund Balance is largely made up of district employee's payments into JSD'S self-insurance plan. Very interesting how that works, huh?

On Janesville School Board leader has been controversial

I've been advocating for a while now that this district be run efficiently and with conscientious oversight from the school board. The amount of waste and incompetence in the just the last three years is alarming (i.e. the I.T. debacle, the $500k Pennington grant screw-up), but I saw virtually none of you commenting or showing up at school board meetings (yes, I did attend more than a few). But whenever the opportunity for a teacher slam-fest arises, all the not-so-smarts and their poorly thought out opinions crawl out from the woodwork. Why the disconnect? A conservative estimate of district screw-ups and board incompetence would be $900,000 this year(and that's just what we know about). People freaking out about their taxes going up are better served to move their ire to the people who CONTROL the money, not those who are bargaining with them.
Cutting teacher pay, positions, and benefits will lead us down a slippery slope where the most talented teachers will leave for other districts and ironically what we'll be left with is exactly the scenario many of you already claim exists: teachers who can't leave due to their incompetence or lack of experience, and administrators who are reluctant to reprimand and terminate because they've lost the ability to attract professional educators.
How inviting does that look to a business looking to locate here? If you think that a strong public school district doesn't matter, you're mistaken. They must be able to recruit and keep young, educated talent. Educated people value quality education.
I understand the fear from people with fixed incomes, but people with fixed incomes were paying for your kids education, too... and I will be on a fixed income paying for another kid's education some day. If you're living in a city and are complaining about having to pay for public education, you're probably still whining about cold winters too.
Finally, what the hell is Bill Sodemann doing on a school board while his kids are home schooled? Obviously the guy has no respect for teachers in the district because he believes he and his wife can do a better job. As a parent, this disgusts me. I have nothing against home-schooling, but you shouldn't be making decisions on a PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD if your school-aged children aren't attending PUBLIC SCHOOL. It leaves him with no vested interest in the quality of education, only the cost.
My impression of Bill from the meetings I've attended is he's always trying too hard to be the smartest person in the room. Believes he's a contrarian, but comes off as an illogical obstructionalist. Kind of a "cut off your nose to spite your face" type thinker. Probably not the best choice for a school board president.
