OMG.. I'm laughing so hard I'm almost crying. Thank goodness most of you here also feel this is about the most ridiculous thing we've read in weeks. Thank goodness we uncovered this "tragedy" in the wake of all that's happening in our community and country. We needed the laugh.
On Sound "no" to Clinton schools referendum

How to pass a referendum on new school spending:
Eliminate "wants" and focus only on true "needs". I doubt anyone wants an inferior education for their children. But you must define, in your community, where the line between education ends and the line for "extra stuff" begins. Most of us can do without the "atriums" and other fluff. Build a simple building with simple classrooms, drop all the "style" and spend the savings on true educational tools like computer labs, chem labs and quality textbooks along with teachers to teach.
If there is a true space problem or facility problem, this can be demonstrated to the public relatively easily. But this wasteful, decorative spending that benefits no one has to go. Next to go are the huge expenses that benefit only a select few, among them might be pools, olympic quality tracks, and auditoriums that mimic Broadway theatres.
I truly believe that a school referendum where a building project is genuinely needed and approached practically with the entire community's interest in mind can still pass in this era of economic uncertainty.
This idea that every district needs all the amenities to compete with bigger districts in "open enrollment" and things like that just doesn't fly -- smaller districts have their own unique advantages, they just have to sell them. Maybe its smaller class sizes, or more emphasis on particular extracurriculars that are hard to find elsewhere. But its the entire community: those with kids and those without, that must be satisfied that the project is in their best interest.
Good luck to all involved on the next go round.

I didn't think I agreed with thekid until Schultz's post. But now -- I guess I do. I hope some honest legislator reads your concise statement and gets the "message" that this is a symptom of the very big problem you bring to light and then takes some responsible action. But I'm afraid that's a wish that won't come true.

While I understand the "tip represents the service" comment, I hope everyone understands that wait staff are often paid deplorable wages of 2-3 bucks and hour and management is allowed to get away with that because tips are "expected" to make up the difference. So please understand that this person who is waiting on some totally unappreciative people all day long, might just be having an "off day". You might not leave a big bonus of a tip -- but if you got your food without any major problems - a tip (and yes, based on the usual bill - not a promo or freebie) is simply the right thing to do.

I am always amazed by the number of people who claim to hate snow, but choose to live where it is going to snow, without fail, every winter. I commute 15 miles each day to work and my wife commutes 50. You've just got to be sensible and expect the drive to be longer and slower. Or, maybe just don't go out then like amalama and stay at home. If you're in Wisconsin, you've gotta know its gonna snow.

I'm bored with these comments. I think I'll be a coward and go out in the dark to a stranger's home and trespass on their property and then destroy something of theirs, just because I can. This isn't about pumpkins - its about respect for others (or a complete lack thereof) that is disappearing at an alarming rate.

I would think its a great start at a fund to move the fairgrounds. $400,000 over ten years is a lot of cash to the county that wasn't expected.

I would hope that the $400,000 windfall over 10 years for the use of space on the Fairgrounds would be a great start of funding the move of the fairgrounds? Or have they already spent that money on something else?

Who's administering the funds here? Are they only for Newville or all residents and businesses impacted by this disaster?
