Education and financial prudence do more for the consumer than any amount of lawmaking and lobbying.

What does it matter that Mr. Sheridan had the temerity to date a fellow human being? What matters is that his stance makes sense. If he had, like his critics seemed to want, decided NOT to do what is best for his constituents and instead "stayed the course" out of fear for being criticized over his love life, then he really would not deserve to be in office.

What's unethical is the mindless acceptance of this faux populism as some kind of logical basis for action. The reason so many rate caps have been rejected isn't because of some grand conspiracy by mustache-twirling villains as many would like to believe, but because rate caps would result in having no industry at all. It's incredible that people would go so far as to blame a business for being profitable.
On Rep. Sheridan, would you apply for a payday loan?

I, for one, don't share your views. You refuse to back up any of your own claims with facts. These supposedly better "long term" alternatives simply can't handle the demand that exists right now. It's easy to tell people to just get over it and be better at life from the bully pulpit, but this is the real world. Attempting to run them out of town like scapegoats just kills more businesses. Is that all that's needed these days to vilify something? An op/ed about how someone finds other people's livelihoods unsavory? What a nation we live in, eh?

What this really underscores is the need for consumers to get educated and be provided with the right information about their options. People frankly did not have enough options to effectively deal with their financial issues. Instead of narrowing their options further still, everyone will be better off if we work to foster better sense of fiscal responsibility in our communities.

There are so many more important issues that need to be addressed. People are losing their homes, our schools need help, we need better health care, our government needs to manage ITS debt… yet we get stable of candidates that claim to protect us from debt, through payday loan rate caps? This will do nothing to improve out social outlook. We need to elect officials that have guts enough to take on the real problems we face.

What Mr. Sheridan does and who he associates with isn't relevant to the quality of his lawmaking. Voters should take the time and examine the bills themselves, lest our society devolve into McCarthyist witch-hunting based on casual association.
