On State employees decry loss of collective bargaining rights

"Wisconin's got no money," Joe Knilans? That didn't stop you from giving tax breaks to the wealthy the minute you got to Madison. Traitor!

On Public workers could pay thousands toward benefits under Walker plan

Republicans represent the rich, and, as this thread shows, they have done a great job of turning middle class Wisconsinites against each other so that the rich can sneak off with 99% of the economic pie. If unions go away so does the middle class in this country.

Jim Doyle in the current budget, 09-11, for one. There would be little deficit at all if Republicans weren't so intent on the state and national levels with giving tax breaks to their rich benefactors.

Kill the bill. It is union busting, pure and simple. Walker and the Republicans are shills for the super-rich and don't care about the middle class. Other Governors have dealt with similar-sized deficits without using them as a pretext for this kind of extremism.

On Rock County could close juvenile detention center

Posted on August 6 at 12:44 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

There are at least two problems with the present Rock Co JDC: Gross overcapacity and its (intentional) design to look/feel like an adult jail/prison.
We do not need anything nearly as large or as (expensively) secure as the current JDC. The idea was sold to taxpayers back when it was popular to believe we were all about to be overwhelmed by a hoard of youthful criminals. This was political nonsense and hucksterism at its worst. No such threat existed or materialized. Of course, if you build it, they will come. Every problem looks like a nail when all you have at your disposal is a hammer, and thus it was with juvenile probation agents and the detention center over the past several years. In many cases the overly harsh treatment of secure detention has done more harm than good.
We do need a safe place for abused, neglected, addicted, troubled or dangerously immature kids to be placed temporarily. Something like the old Rock County Youth Home would serve this purpose just fine and at a much lower cost.

On Church worker’s firing sparks protest

Morlino ends the career of a dedicated, Godly servant of the church after a 10 minute conversation over a 6 year old thesis he admits he didn't even bother to read? What a compassionate, Christ-like leader. A McDonald's worker would get more consideration if his/her suitability for the job were being questioned.

You can bet with Morlino it is all about politics. His team lost last November, now it is retaliation time.

This is the same guy who sits on the board of a school for Latin American right-wing goon squads, lies about survey results being confidential and then spends our money to sue to get the results, politicizes the pulpit, and generally treats priests and laity in the diocese like crap. How he gets anyone to work for him is a mystery.

How timely it is that he intends to make a direct appeal to fund diocesan services this year! I suggest a boycott.

Maybe someone will have a 10 minute conversation with him someday and tell him his services are no longer desired.

On Overdue books bring jail time

How embarrassing for the City of Beloit, and it is purely the city government's fault. And what a waste of taxpayer money. Figure out how other libraries and private businesses (like video stores) deal with the problem of unreturned materials and follow suit. Or get into another line of work.
