On Two-car crash yields 3 DUI busts

Posted on November 4 at 12:52 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Thankfully it sounds like nobody was hurt in this accident. The point is that both driving drunk and possessing or using pot is illegal, period. It is legal to consume alcohol, but once you have too much and get behind the wheel, you are breaking the law.

I have a question for you kid, why do you want your pot legalized so badly? I have no idea how much pot costs, nor do I care, but if it is legalized they are going to tax it to death anyways. Seems like it would be better for you since you are a law abiding citizen and all except for the pot use, to keep it the way it is. I mean look what they have done with the tobacco tax and now they are trying to add the beer tax too. Do you really think it will be any different? I'm just sayin....

On Wis. sidelines new slogan, 'Live like you mean it'

I think it would have been a good idea to open it up as a contest. Winner gets a free trip for 4 or something. Sure you would have spent more time and money sorting through all the entries, and I am sure there would be some bogus and crude entries, but in all I am sure it would have cost less than it did to pay a firm or whoever they paid to come up with it. After a slogan was picked, run another contest for the logo. I am sure something just as insightful could have come from anyone of us.

On Debit card scam hits Beloit

I had a voicemail the other day when I got home from work. The only part that got caught on the voicemail was the press "1" for assistance, and then it stopped. I was wondering what it was from, I guess it could have been this scam. I live in Janesville too, so beware.

On No stimulus money for bike tunnel plan

Posted on July 22 at 4 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Spikesmom, I really don't think the backup would be very disruptive to traffic. It would only turn red for a short time just like a cross walk sign turns white allowing pedestrians the right of way to cross. Then it would turn back green and wouldn't turn red again until someone else pushed the button. How much time would elapse 30 seconds maybe 60?

I have noticed this area both while riding on the trail and driving through this area and the yellow lights aren't real noticeable especially with the fire station right down the street with similar flashing lights. I have seen all types of behavior. Cars not stopping, speeding, some cars stopping and not others, bikers not pushing the button and just going out in front of traffic, and bikers sitting there talking on a cell phone while traffic stops and they don't cross. I think something should be done to remedy this situation, but I think a tunnel and/or roundabout might be a little overkill.

I seem to remember something about the light not being a good solution during the original discussion because of cost, practicality or something. I don't remember exactly. I would like to see it again if anyone knows what was brought up before.

On To spank or not to spank

I agree 100% with Maryann.

"The key, as others have pointed out, is that whatever your punishment methods, they have to be backed up with love. If you aren't hugging and loving your kids and giving them the stability they crave, your parenting will not be effective. That's the point that most often gets lost in this debate."

On Fourth of July celebration lacks community support

Posted on July 7 at 9:06 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I definately appreciate the effort and did donate as well. I went to the carnival but watched the fireworks from a distance to avoid the large crowd while leaving. I didn't spend much money at the carnival because I didn't think it was worth it. The comments leading up to the celebration turned me off as well and made me not want to go, but I still did.

Unlike a lot of other people, I like the location at the sports complex. I think the fireworks are visable for a much larger crowd being up on the top of the hill. There is plenty of room to expand the event with other games like softball or vollyball etc. which hasn't happened yet but would make a difference. This wouldn't be even possible at Traxler. You could even charge a small entry fee for the tournament teams, that would help offset some of the costs as well as boost the attendance. Plus for me it is closer.

All in all, I enjoy the event and don't want it to go away. I want my children to have good memories of the Fourth of July as I do from my childhood. I do think improvements can be made to help out the attendance and donations, as most things can be improved with a little change.

On Janesville fireworks show lacked community support

Posted on July 6 at 10:46 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I attended the carnival and other festivities this year and donated to the cause. I brought my children out for some games and to go on rides but after going into the carnival, I decided that rides were out of the question because they didn't look very well kept or safe and they were 3-4 dollars a ride. Instead we played some games, bought some kettle corn, listened to some music, kids had their faces painted, and they threw some balls at the dunk tank. The safety and cost of the rides was my only disappointment.

One thing that could have contributed to the poor turnout is the way things were handled leading up to the festivities. Last week, and I can't remember who it was exactly, but someone was talking about getting support and how it wouldn't happen again next year if the support wasn't there this year. To me it kind of shocked me because it didn't sound like they were promoting what was going on for the Fourth, it seemed as though they were threatening us with an ultimatum. I know it made me not want to go, but I still did for my kids.

There also didn't seem like there was that much to do there. I mean lots of other communities have more to do for the average adult than a beer tent and bands playing. There are plenty of games that people would pay a fair entry fee to play that don't cost much to run and at the sports complex one thing they have is room to play some games. If there were a softball tournament, tug of war, bean-bag toss, kickball, vollyball, or any other type of activities going on, you would get a much better turnout I think.

On Janesville water probably wasn’t contaminated

Posted on May 15 at 9:03 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I would rather be inconvenienced by having to buy bottled water and soda or by having to boil pots of water than risk the chance of getting sick from contaminated water. To say the city should have waited is ridiculous because if they had waited and the second test came back as contaminated, everyone would be saying why didn't you tell us sooner. It just proves that you can never please everyone.

Congratulations on your second place finish Siven, that is quite an accomplishment. You still have two more years to strive for that championship, keep working hard and it will happen for you!

Congratulations also to the other area wrestlers on a successful season. Wrestling is such a great sport to participate in. It really shows what your made of!

On Wisconsin vets see pet owners cutting back on care

Posted on January 6 at 1:03 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I find this very plausible, but just because you have cut back on vet visits, it doesn't mean you are being neglectful to your animals. You can purchase most of the necessary shots for your animal at stores like farm and fleet and administer them to your animals yourself for much, much less. You still need to have some given by a veterinarian though (Rabies for example).

There really is no comparison that can be made between a human child and an animal though. Sure my animals are part of the family and we all love them, but the fact remains they are animals and my children, wife and I have to come first if it really comes down to it. Although I bet you may see a drop in the number of doctor visits for simple colds and coughs in humans as well, with people trying to fight them off by themselves instead of rushing into the doctor for every little thing.

I would bet that the number of vet and doctor visits when something is really wrong remains about the same either way.
