On Eight hospitalized after rural car-versus-tree crashes

Posted on November 27 at 6:29 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

My sympathies are for the mother. She's the one who'll hear the "where was the parental supervision" and "We're gonna SUE" comments from the other parents, even though they all know deep down, that if kids want to get into trouble, they will. Kids are followers; if one says "Jump", most of them will blindly follow. Law of averages says 99.9% of them graduate and go on to do even more stupid things as adults. It's called "life". All a parent can do is drill right and wrong into a kid and convince themselves that it WILL sink in, even if it's subliminally and takes a while.

On How will the economy affect your holiday shopping in 2008?

Dub... good comment. 4 to 1 sounds like a good ratio to me, too. I'd rather have a kid playing video games than standing on the street corner, bored... What's the phrase? " An idle man's brain is the devil's workshop - John Bunyan "

Some of the video games are actually educational (I know; them of them are moronic and/or violent). Just like life, right?

On How has the economy affected your charitable giving for 2008?

Posted on November 20 at 12:56 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Jax, that's basically what we're doing this year (for the first time). Our parents used to give us some cash (silly, as we're all adults and can all pay our own way). THIS year, Mom asked, "Would you guys mind if we just donated it all to a charity?" (In this case, Touched By A Paw, our local no-kill cat shelter). We all unanimously agreed "YES!" What a good feeling we'll have knowing that we did something towards the true spirit of Christmas.

On Lottery says illegal pull-tabs cost Wis. millions

To Bouncerbear: Agreed on that lottery statement. If they would make the breakdowns much more appealing (such as add a sixth number & Powerball to the total of numbers as one possibility) and have the chance to win $20, $100, $5000, $50,000, $250,000, $1,000,000 and THEN the jackpot (or something like that), I'd be much more apt to remember to buy one. None of this $1, $2, $7 crap.

On Father accused of killing son still critical

Why would you kill one child and not the rest? (Yes, I know even one is horrible). That's the odd part. Are the rest adults now? Was this the only child left at home? IF that was the case, perhaps he felt like he needed to take the boy "with him" if he was leaving this world. The Egyptians used to do the same with people and pets.
I know I couldn't bring myself to do it, but I know if I were to die, it would be a temptation to take my pets along, because my greatest fear is who would take care of them as well as I did? Just a thought.

On Left to our own devices

Nice to know I'm not alone. Write/eat left handed (although the right could be used in a pinch which is nice if I ever hurt the left one). Everything else is right first/left if the right gets tired of doing whatever it is I'm doing (such as snow shoveling). I just always tell everyone at least I am using both sides of my brain. Maybe that's why my head hurts all of the time... heh.

Always remember our motto: "Left handed people are in their right minds."

Well said, John Doe. While 99% of the population functions quite normally, it's that 1% you gotta watch out for.

On Gazette will be 4 to 5 hours late

Gotta agree with gocrew. I called my mom to tell her not to panic when the paper isn't on time tonight, and her reply was, "Oh, well, there are many nights we don't get it at all, so we wouldn't panic."

It would be different if it were a mag at $19.95 a year, but the Gazette is expensive. People at least deserve to get their paper 99% of the time.

On East Troy man seriously injured in cycle crash

Posted on October 19 at 12:55 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

It's the "it won't happen to me" syndrome because of his age. When we get older, we've gone through a few "close calls" and learn to be wary of others. 99% of us get through those close ones; it's the 1% that get screwed (through their fault or others). I feel for his family. They have my sympathy. I'm not tossing stones. My house is glass, too.

Heh. The owner was probably trying to get rid of the house and the officer thwarted THAT, didn't he?
