On Note to self: anchors are for boats, not banks

Posted on January 17 at 9:28 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Now would be a good time to address that the business structure of credit unions vs. banks is very different. Unless something has changed of late, credit unions are "not-for-profit" entities and thus not subject to federal income tax. Banks are in business to make a profit and thus are taxed. As credit unions have come to act more like banks these days--with the same services and functionality--is this fair? Just food for thought.

Really people...some constructive discussions are ocurring and the only thing you concern yourselves with is who paid for the pizza? What a bunch of small minds.

On Parkview board votes to close two schools

It's hard to make the tough decisions, but that's what elected officials are supposed to do. When your own personal agenda gets in the way of doing what is fiscally responsible you are no longer doing a public service. The vote against closing Newark will haunt this district for many years to come--and it will be the same people complaining when "their" programs are cut.

On Janesville City Council president resigns

George Brunner has been an outstanding council member. He's been thoughtful and forthright in his dealings with our community. I am sorry that he got caught up in an emotionally difficult family situaton and wish him nothing but the best as his life moves forward.

On Headline: What age is too old for trick-or-treating?

Better yet, how young is too young? What's up with infants in strollers trick or treating--I'm talking babies less than 6 months old and NOT with other kids, just adults. Who is that candy for?

On Groups ramping up efforts in Republican recalls

A very inefficient organization. I got a call wondering if I was going to vote in the recall election--we don't have anybody up for recall in our district. Great way to spend money.

Is a business exempt from the ordinance? How 'bout the terrace signs at Hanna's restaurant on E Milw at Pontiac? He has something there every day.

On Because getting there is half the fun

We packed "fun boxes" for our kids, with a variety of treats, car games, word searchs, MadLibs, etc. They got to select something from their box as either a reward for being good, when they got bored, after a gas stop, etc. I had fun making them happy and they had a variety of non-electronic things to do.

If we were taking a long trip, we also loved to see how many different state license plates we could find. How fun when you came across Alaska or Hawaii! One year we had over 40 states represented on our trip. Old fashioned entertainment, which I think is an important part of a family vacation.

On Do you still print your photos?

I print memorable photos, mostly of special occasions and vacations. Partly for the ease of picking up a photo album and re-living the memories, partly to share with the older generation that doesn't live digitally!

Was it discussed...will this also save money to combine the Feb and Apr elections? I would think--staffing issues as well as printing of ballots. Good ideas all the way around.
