On UPDATE: Armed robbery in residential Janesville neighborhood

Posted on November 27 at 11:04 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

"If we all carried guns things like this would not happen." Kimbo75.......You're right. If we all carried guns, instead of just a robbery there would also have been dead bodies on the sidewalk.

If buying nice yarns is to expensive, come visit one of our groups where you can learn to spin your own - even using just a pencil, a cup-hook, and a cardboard disk! For "higher tech", you can use a wooden dowel, cup hook, and old CDs. Wool roving and other fibers can easily be purchased at local farms (usually from $2/ounce and up) and you'll have luxurious, unique, and very special yarn or felt fabric in the end. Lessons and trouble-shooting are always FREE. Learn more at our blog: www.stitchingcreationsandcommunity.blogs...

lakekennedy...may I also point out...JPAC is self-sustaining and has never received any operational or maintenance funding from the city.

It seems Janesville will never have a shortage of the self-righteous and hypocritically pious. Thanks to those who have left comments that are supportive - of BOTH sides of this issue. When some become so preoccupied with their "mission", they can easily develop a narrowed focus that overlooks or even ignores the consequences to their fellow citizens. To those who continue to berate and belittle brewersrock: your true nature is showing and I do, sincerely, hope you never have to suffer the indignities and harassment that you have placed upon her simply for trying to defend a residential quality of life that all homeowners everywhere deserve. The lesson to be learned? In the future, before attempting such a charitable endeavor I hope people will consider other options; contact and work with existing organizations and charities in the area who have proven they are responsible, accountable, and responsive to those living by their locations rather than individuals throughout the city duplicating services and harming others in the process. There are REAL, valid, and rational reasons for good zoning laws and the prompt enforcement of their intent. Please keep your neighborhoods' residential character, keep it safe, and keep it friendly by adhering to intent, as well as the exact "letter" of the law.

There has been NO reason for everyone to criticize brewersrock and others who are rightly concerned about what is taking place in a residential neighborhood. Unless people have personally lived next to a "give-away" facility/activity/organization, most have absolutely NO idea the extreme levels of adverse consequences that can, and do, follow. LUCKILY, most will never know but that does not give them the right to gang up and condemn those who have, as well as those who are open to understanding. Citizens of all types - rich and poor - contribute to our community well-being. It's time some learn some functional respect for one another in civil discussion open to learning how some on-the-surface good deeds directly and detrimentally affect others without trampling on one another's civil rights and personal reputation. Warm, fuzzy feelings about doing good cannot make the undesired and destructive consequences invisible. Charitable work, as with all other endeavors, will always be more successful and find more support when the need, availability of existing services, detrimental as well as good impact, and much more are thoroughly researched by those giving so freely of their caring, donations, time, abd talents.

On Books in the news

Posted on November 11 at 1:49 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Books are compact, portable, and an independent method of sharing and preserving accumulated knowledge. Any time a library removes books of which there are no duplicates, that library's value is diminished. It is outrageous that so many libraries purge so many books; sell so many that are donated through community goodwill just because there is lacking shelf space. As a physical object, books go beyond the simple text and many tell stories about the period in which they're produced and the technology of that time. Some people may prefer to rip apart books so that the illustrations can be cut out and mounted in frames or craft projects instead of reading them. Others understand the inherent value of books. Unlike the internet, old books will not give you an instant weather forecast, the latest video, nor will they teach you to write in javascript. But they will help you learn how to live and what it means to be human. And, as with the death of loved ones, the "death" of a book is always a sad day when we should reflect on the enormity of that loss to all.

Zoning is about wins and losses. Zoning is for the betterment of the entire community. In this case, there are big wins for those who can come and go at will. Wins for the family now admired for sponsoring this activity. And, yes, even wins for those who are literally using anothers' private residential property without consent, ignoring public safety, and disregarding adequate space and facilities to create a charity-business-like-climate in a residential neighborhood for their otherwise laudable efforts. The question is, what is a reasonable loss to ask an adjacent residential landowners to assume and tolerate? What real health and safety risks shall the general public be put at to accomplish the goals? What about the signs for the sale that are illegally placed throughout the area? There is a reason for city government determined land-use zoning and it is to the benefit of the entire community that residents use common-sense when they endeavor to do good deeds understanding that existing zoning laws must be enforced.

On Ryan wins sixth term in House

Sadly, no voice for area People in Congress yet again. Republicans who cross-vote in the primary so Ryan never has a strong challenge only demonstrate their own lack of confidence in the GOP's Golden Boy, too. I wonder how many voted without remembering Ryan had wanted (still?) to put their Social Security monies into the stock market...
