On Rockford man injures girlfriend, police officer

Posted on November 23 at 3:38 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

In regards to an earlier post about the article, the point was raised that the PD should send more than one officer to the scene of a domestic.
This is true, and is always practiced. Spade was not the only officer on scene. At least one other officer was on scene, and possibly more given the nature of the call.
This is the most dangerous type of call for any officer and shows how quickly things go from routine to life threatening out there. I'm happy to hear she's recovering and the aggressor is in custody.

In response to an earlier comment as to why Welte has so many more OWI stops than other officers, I'll state why this might be the case.
Welte is an experienced officer with seniority, which allows him to patrol in a rover car quite often. This means he isn't in one area of the city handling calls for service as a primary officer, but as backup officer. That allows him more time to patrol and be proactive.
He has also taken the initiative to take as much in-service training as is available to educate himself on OWI enforcement on his own time.
He takes the idea of protect and serve seriously and knows that drunks cause injury to the innocent. His department recognizes his dedication and professionalism and now the public is aware of it as well.
Also, don't think that he only handles OWI's. He is a veteran officer who handles every type of call, every shift. He just really digs traffic and is great at it.

Thank You,Bellagio.
I'm glad the homeowners were able to escape.
Also, those who can-do. Those who can't-post negative comments about those who can. It's pointless to argue.

No problem Gmaof3.
I know it must seem that police never stop people at that location if every time you go through there you don't see someone pulled over. It's an easy assumption to make.
Be careful and safe out there!

Gma, I promise you that many citations are issued for incidents at that particular intersection. In an eight hour shift, it's very, very safe to say that the officers who patrol the two sectors of the city that are divided by Humes Road are at that intersection dozens of times. Many violations are cited. Many are not because the officer isn't there at that time.
It's the cat-and-mouse game that law enforcement officers play every day.
The comment about waiting and looking at a red light, instead of just looking at your light turning green and assuming that the coast is clear...that is golden advice. That's what separates a good driver from an accident victim.

This is how it works:
The PD gets grant money from a variety of resources who designate where the money should be spent.
The PD needs additional money to pay for the extra speed enforcement because the officer on traffic duty is an extra car that day. The city budget really is that tight.
It may appear to some that officers only perform traffic enforcement. But the reality is they are understaffed and run from call to call, with very little free time to apply to traffic detail. Which is why additional resources are needed to perform the speed enforcement that the public has asked for.
One person commented about a particular intersection in the city that has a high number of drivers running the red lights. That is exactly the kind of input from the community the department wishes to receive. One call to the department places that intersection on the list of areas the officer on grant money is instructed to patrol. I'm sure the officers know that particular intersection is a crash magnet, but the call from the public is a guarantee to get patrol of that area increased. Public service and safety really are important to the members of the department.

Mymaro, just go away & stop commenting...you'll sound smarter that way.

As for the notifications, it's hard to keep these type of stories out of the paper when the press knows via scanners what police are up to, and because of the First Amendment freedom of the press, they can post whatever non-incriminating evidence they feel will produce a good story. It's their right and their job.
Let the PD do their job, then complain about (or congratulate) them.
