On Ordinance brews controversy in Milton

I moved from the Janesville area to Minneapolis. To anyone that's not aware ... the state of MN is even more messed up than WI. There are cities here that force bars to close at 1 am. This has created after bar hot spots in the communities. I would like to point out that this means that people are going to private locations where there is no bouncing or employee to cut people off when they've had too much to drink. Then there is the no alcohol sales on Sunday (huge shocker for newcomers here). Though, Monday - Saturday you can buy beer anywhere until 10pm. Oh, you can buy 3.2 beer here on Sunday. What is 3.2 beer? Most of your macro brews (miller, coors, bud, etc) are 3.2 beer. It's the alcohol rating by weight, and not by volume. Anyone want to ponder why the large beer companies can do this? hmmmm? Why are there soooo many inconsistencies here? Well, religious puritan priorities mostly. What comes from most religious puritan priorities? A desire to control others and to bend them at any cost to the what's good for me is good for you ideologies. Also, then there is the illogical reasoning in government and legislation that if 1% of the people are doing something that we don't like ... well, let's stop 100% of the people from doing it, too, by making unnecessary legislation to create a false sense of security and comfort. What higher ground for us to stand on... when we make it illegal (it's the law which makes me right mentality). This is the same bs that happens everywhere. People start comparing things thinking that it makes sense. Oh, this is what they do ... let's do it too. No one really stops, I mean REALLY stops to think about ALL the consequences and then makes a completely unbiased decision on what's right and wrong. There is this mentality in America that all bad things can be removed from reality by creating laws. This regulating sales of liquor and beer by time is no different and is silly. Let the customers dictate how late a store should stay open not the state, city or federal government for that matter. This is a capitalist society, which means that the all mighty dollar takes precedence. If I want to BUY something at 4 am and I work a second or third shift lifestyle ... why should I be forced to conform to a life of timelines normally held by a first shift individual. Why? because politicians aren't second and third shift positions, normally. Now we get back into what's good for me is good for you bs. Remember that after an election people don't all-of-a-sudden become smarter because they are now an elected official. The government shutdown in MN has taught us all a very valuable lesson here ... coming from someone who isn't a lib, dfl or gop ... government has way too much involvement in our lives. When the rights of government and law enforcement start to automatically trump the rights of the people .... things have gone way too far in the wrong direction.

I think this should go into effect. Personally, if you hurt anyone in my family ... including my animals... a federal ruling against you will be the least of your worries.

Let's face it. Bad driving habits go well beyond talking on the phone. It includes anything that distracts a driver from the primary task of driving. Just creating laws to stop this will lead to laws that force anyone with children in the vehicle to have at least one other person capable to supervise those children...so the driver won't have to (and lawfully can't). Or maybe they should outlaw radios in the vehicle because you have to take your eyes off the road to use it. We should start fining people that have food in the vehicle, because eating is a distraction. Where does it end? On top of all that, look how many people run stop signs and speed. That's already against the law and most of us do it ALL the time. I am all for making things safer, but the solution has to make sense and have a considerably realistic overall impact to actually improve the situation. If x, y and z are problems that lead to accidents that cause injury and/or death ... then only focusing on x, while doing nothing about y and z ... is not a real solution.

I personally think that if there are that many bad drivers on the road...then the answer isn't going to be creating laws for everything we deem inappropriate behavior. The answer is driver training. The last time most of us did any driving training or testing was when we got our license. I haven't. The last time I did was when I got the license over 20 years ago. The answers aren't about creating laws like this one. The answer is going to be about better training and maybe that means that every other year or every five years you need to be retested at the DMV. That will make better drivers. Also, maybe their should be medical certification requirements for drivers like there are for pilots and commercial drivers. If you don't have a current medical and the proper re currency training your license is automatically suspended. That would force EVERYONE to lern how to drive better.

This is a ridiculous thing for a city to enact. Visitors to your city are going to be oblivious to this law if there are no visible signs posted as they enter your town. To be one or two cities not to allow this in an entire state that does ... it's silly and targeting visitors should be considered criminal. Also, why not include those on "official business?" I am an instrument pilot and think that my training in cockpit management skills probably far exceeds some part-time fireman, police officer or city clerk's ability to manage themselves in a vehicle. Soon all vehicles will have the same sterile environment rules that the FAA imposes. What's going to be even more disappointing: soon we'll have laws that push for a completely childproofed environment in the name of improving safety and saving lives. There will be laws like: you must wear a life jacket when within 100 feet of any body of water. People are going to stop bathing in their own homes without a life jacket, or if your neighbor has a pool...you'll have to wear a life jacket while sitting in your living room. It sounds absurd! But that's the path we are taking when we allow our governments (city, state and federal) to keep intruding in our daily lives like this. I would be all for stoping new drivers from doing this, but MOST of us have been driving for decades and most of that time while talking on the phone. Just as a reminder: Accidents happen and all the laws in the world won't stop them happening.

I love hearing when people pick their battles and reveal their hypocrisies like this. Of all the things that everyone does in this world that involves carcinogens and polluting the air (like driving cars, using plastics and electricity ... all have a much larger and drastic carcinogen foot print than cigarettes), there is always those that put their instant dissatisfaction two cents in when it comes to smokers. I would actually sympathise with them... if they weren't just another cog in the pollution machine and contributing to global warming with their own large carbon foot print. People in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks.

About 10 years ago I was living in Beloit. My cat got outside and was picked up by someone and taken to the Rock County Humane Society. They charged me $25 for the day they kept him. Then five months later I got $150 ticket from the city for having a cat at large. Both ridiculously high amounts to pay for what happened. It never cost the RCHS $25 for keeping my cat for a day. Also, if the city of Beloit is charging that high of a fine why isn't that money covering the cost of taking care of the cat? Maybe part of the problem with taking care of so many strays, is that they are not strays! Stop picking animals off the street that are not posing a risk or problem! Stop wasting everyones time and money! It's funny that in the neighborhood I lived in the "stray" animals were never as big a problem as the kids running through yards, vandalizing, shooting things with bb guns, and such as kids being kids. I saw a bunch of "stray" kids. hmmmm. Maybe start taking them to the RCHS see if you can't get free help and then charge their parents for babysitting.

What happened to this guy is ridiculous, and it appears without bounds: Schuetz also wrote that curtailing late beer sales was “in the interest of public safety.” Really? Because no one is driving drunk to the liquor store at noon? or how about at 8:45 pm? Is this the only excuse that most of us are willing, over and over, to swallow? Where is the boundary of "interest in public safety" and my rights as an individual to make my own choices? If the state knows so much better than we do ... why is this not a socialist society?
