On 2009: A look back

I guess having your Hometown Army National Guard mobize wasn't big enough news for the gazette, huh? Sometimes I wonder where your priorities really lie. Just out of curiosity...were they forgotten, or just not newsworthy?

On Deputy accused of sex assault resigns post

I know this is a crazy thought, but maybe we shouldn't be so quick to hang him yet. There is a due process in this country, and public opinion has a habit of "screwing" it up. Let's see what a jury of his peers has to say. Yes, he was a pretty foolish guy, as a cop or otherwise, to even be near a party like that. Cops, just like Soldiers, have codes of conduct to follow. He had no right to shed a "bad light" on the Sheriffs Department. He should have been fired just for that aspect of the case. So, don't judge him before hearing ALL the evidence. It's the "American" thing to do.

On Author wants to move beyond 'War on Terror'

It would be a "Great" thing if we could say "Peace and Happiness to All on this place we call Earth". Unfortunately, that's a Fairy Tale. As long as these factions keep trying to kill Americans & our allies, there will always be a threat....We can't let our guard down! So, there is no alternative, we must stay at a high level of alert.

On Desks for Al-Hussein Elementary School in Umm Qasr, Iraq

This is my second tour. I arrived back in the states in 2006, and then redeployed for a second time recently. I have noticed a definate change in Iraq since my last visit. I've talked with several Soldiers who go over the wire often. Even though Iraq still has its problems, the Iraqi Police and security forces are taking care of it themselves. For the most part, there seems to be peace throughout this war-torn country. The Iraqi people have earned a much needed "peace" in thier lives. I hope it lasts long after we've left. Good reporting SPC Morrow.

On What’s Alpha Company Up To?

It's really sad that this blog has turned into what it is today...a sounding board for complaints. This is my second deployment and I know how time away from home, long hours and bordom can set in after a period of time. This blog was put together to give our home town an idea of what it's like being deployed, through our experiences, both good and not so good. In a "perfect" world, the FRG would be fully staffed and have the support of "ALPHA" companies entire family network. Unfortunatly, that's not always the way things go. "ALPHA" Soldiers need your support. They really don't need to hear about "disgruntled" spouses, on how bad the FRG is doing or any other problems for that matter. Soldiers want to read this blog and know they have community support. As a mid-range leader with ALPHA, my job is to help get these Soldiers through this deployment and back home to thier families. I need your help to keep thier spirits high, not to depress them with friviluos complaints. If the FRG needs help, help them...volunteer, but don't drag negative comments into a community blog. Janesville is my hometown and I'm honored to be a part of the community. So, with that, remember when the Soldiers read encouraging and upbeat comments here, you're helping them to stay encouraged and upbeat.

On Cruising the strip remains a popular activity

Oh my God! I'm 50 yrs old and remember cruising the strip downtown when I was a teen. It's all about socializing with your peers. Can it be dangerous? Today, yes. With cell phones getting in the way of watching where you're going, absolutely. Back in the 70's it was all about the cars...I had a 1967 Chevelle...Loved that car. All my friends had Great cars to show off. Bottom line, no matter what the reason, cruising is here to stay. It's been a National past-time since the 50's. Our "Men & Women in Blue" just have to do their best to enforce the laws of the road. We can only hope our young people do the right thing and have Fun at the same time.

On State Guard members at risk of identity theft

It was a "civilian" contractor....not the military, who lost the computer. Know the facts before write something stupid, w8nc. Oh, we serve, so you can say things like that. Apologies.

On Colonel: State's soldiers in danger

Posted on August 1 at 8:05 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Sounds like "dreec" is the one with issues. This is my second deployment, and as stated by "swtlilone2", it is the safest place to be. I am in a position to be able to speak to most of the Soldiers in Co A 132D BSB, and so far, there is no negativity. Yes, of course we miss our home and families, but this deployment, in my eyes, is going just fine. This comes from a guy who spent his first tour in "GunTrucks". There's alot of participation in the MWR events among other things here. So, if there are any "miserable" Soldiers here at FOB Bucca...they're hiding from me.

On Camp Bucca Pool Shootout

Actually, we do all kinds of sports activities here during off-duty hours. The outdoor sports such as Softball, Football and Boxing are done in the evening hours, so temperatures are only a meer 100-110 instead of 140. I'm looking forward to playing a game of football on sand rather than grass. Could prove to be interesting.
