On Have you considered taking part in the "Cash for Clunkers" program?

Posted on August 16 at 8:44 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

We just did Cash for Clunkers....trading in a big old Chevy truck for a Ford Focus. At $2.50/gallon we will be saving enough to make over three payments on the new car per year. The government decides the stats on MPG....they came up with 16 for the truck and 35 for the Focus. In addition to the $4500 from the government, we got a $2000 rebate from Ford and free financing for three years. I think that was a pretty good deal. Now we drive two cars that are much more efficient as we also own a (paid for) 2005 Escape.

We, also, are taking advantage of the CASH FOR CLUNKERS program and are trading in 1998 large pick up for a Focus. The difference of MPG between the two is nearly 20 MPG. We are keeping the Escape that we have which gets more than 25 MPG, so that nets out pretty well. That is what this program wanted to accomplish and I am very happy with the deal I got. With the $2000 rebate from Ford plus the rebate from the government we are saving a total of $6500 right off the top line plus we are getting 0% interest for three years through Ford. It is a deal that can't be compared to any other. I feel as long as the government is doing this program, why not take advantage. We are positioning ourselves for retirement and now will have two top of the line Fords (A Limited Escape with only 55K miles on it and brand new SEL Focus). I know Janesville has been a Chevrolet town, but we have had very good luck with Fords. According to the news the CASH FOR CLUNKERS program is accomplishing what it set out to do. People are trading in very low MPG vehicles on very high MPG vehicles. I hope they continue the program, however we got in on the first Billion.

On Stricker is still a hero in Edgerton

Although I now live in northern Wisconsin, my heart still lives in Janesville (and a lot of my family). Steve was a visitor to my business a few years ago along with his fishing guide and we sat around and talked about everything that is not golf, it wasn't even mentioned. Steve is the most humble, great guy and it is understandable why he is loved on the pro circuit now. We love to watch him on TV now, and cheer for him to win. He represents his home town with dignity.

Loved the two posts by opinion80 and aruba. Palin has been like fingernails on the blackboard to me since the day I first heard her voice on the radio when she was tabbed to be the VP running mate. I just wish she would go away for good. I would not be surprised if there is some controversy in the Alaska government that she wants to avoid dealing with by quitting.

There was not ONE person already in the Janesville school system that could have been promoted to this position? It seems incredible to me that they had to go outside of their system and hire. That would have left an opening for someone else in Janesville to have a job. Bad move.

Actually, in Wisconsin, parents are responsible for what their kids do until they turn 18, so the parents of the idiots that were driving could be in for some huge lawsuits, I sure wouldn't be surprised. Hope they have insurance, and that probably won't be enough. Life as they knew it for many families there is OVER.

On Janesville church’s chimes prompt noise concerns

We live in a remote country setting in northern Wisconsin and our church is relatively close, located on a lake. Bells were donated and were scheduled to play for six minutes at noon and six and were enjoyed by the fishermen over the water, but some ugly neighbors complained, so we had to tone them down. Whenever I have business at the church and I end up there over noon, I just love listening to the bells, I wish they were loud enough to reach my house. It is hard for me to think about people having such small lives that they want to deprive all the others that enjoy the bells so much of that enjoyment/it is such a short time, but so enjoyable. When I was young we belonged to First Congregational Church in Janesville and the bells were rung manually/played like a keyboard after church and I got to play them for a season or so. I still remember what it was like to crawl up in the belfry and do that. Good memories. I think your person along with our complainers have very small lives and should be pittied. It's too bad that they can change the rules for the most of us that enjoy the bells, that isn't right either.

What a great article, I am reading it from afar, always read the GAZETTE every day online...my home town where part of my heart will always live. I was born in Milton, moved to Janesville. I LOVE my reunions and can't understand why people would turn their backs when invited to one. It is part of each of our personal histories, it is so fun to chat with the people with whom I spent 13 years of my life from kindegarten through the senior year. With all the bad stuff that is going on these days, we need nice stories like this. These people lived through some really bad times and THEY made it, so can we. Wish we would know what they do so we can live to be great old people like them. Bravo.
