On Janesville School Board takes no action on teacher layoffs

Were any of you there at the board meeting? Based on the comments here I doubt it. If you were there, the decision by the board would make complete sense. I was there and it was clearly explained as to why this decision was made.

On Layoff notices stun teachers

Obviously some of you are happy that teachers (real people) will be laid off, but do you realize what this will do to education? Children are going to be negatively affected by all of this. I have children in school and I am worried for their future. Large class sizes are not good for any child.

Teachers I have talked with are not calling in "sick", they are calling in saying they won't be at work. Seems they are telling the TRUTH!

On Protests against Walker plan set

I believe union members understand the money issue and are willing to pay more for insurance and pension, but how is taking away their rights to bargain for working conditions (not talking about pay or insurance) going to help the budget?? I think that is the bigger issue here.

On 9 arrested in third day of Wis. labor protests

Posted on February 17 at 6:06 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I thought one of the rules about posting is "Be Nice." There is a lot of name calling on here. Everyone has a right to his/her opinion, but you claim that anyone protesting is a loser, how are you any better by "name calling?" Should union members actually be happy about this bill? Are you happy about pay cuts, paying more for insurance, having no say in your work environment, etc.? I doubt it.

On Janesville teachers say 'yes' to the contract

SarahB1- You are right teachers did know what they were getting into (different student learning styles, students with needs, correcting papers at home, salary, etc).....however, I don't think colleges prepare new teachers for the extreme behavior issues of some of these students (ones who get violent), lack of parental support, and lack of community support (meaning "teacher bashers".)

On Have you received a raise in the past year? (Please share your place of business in the comments).

Yes, I received a raise. I work for a private company here in Janesville. Some companies are still giving raises.

On Tentative agreement includes pay increases for Janesville teachers

Posted on August 28 at 1:58 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I understand many people are unemployed and taking pay cuts/freezes; however, there are other people (outside of teaching & education) who are getting raises and maintaining benefits. I have many friends and family members who received raises this year and maintained their health and pension benefits, and, no, they are not public employees. Not everyone in Janesville is unemployed or taking pay freezes or cuts. A 1% to 2% raise is not huge, and unless you are directly observing teachers in the classroom, how do you know that many are not doing their jobs well? Sure, there might be poor teachers out there, but there are always great, average, and poor employees at every job.
