On Grant helping Delavan-Darien students get fit

Goodness. Do some research. There are thousands of government grants yearly. Why does one school get it and not the other? Because not every school applied for it, and out of the ones that did apply, some were more in need of it, or had better plans for it, or whatever. They are competitive grants. This is nothing new. Students going off to college apply for grants. Some get them, some don’t.

There is a link between one’s health and their academic success – so this should only help, right?
This grant is not just for fun and games, it is also educational. It teaches students how to ‘improve or maintain their physical well-being, support a lifelong healthy lifestyle, develop social and cooperative skills, learn healthy eating habits and good nutrition’…….
While Delavan schools may have some academic areas that they need to focus on, does that mean they should not pursue a grant to help keep their students healthy?

copper, the athletes signed a contract. the non-athletes did not, but yet are being punished by the school as well. According to the Harvard University School of Law, "Although there is no absolute bar to disciplining students for conduct that occurs outside of school, in most instances, a school cannot punish a student for behavior that occurs outside of school or a school function." So if an athlete broke the code of conduct, they can be denied participation in events. A non-athlete made no such agreement – their punishment is up to someone else.

Dale, another news story, NBC26, interviewed a mom who said she was not told anything until after the punishment was handed down. The way facebook works, I can upload a picture and tag people in it, and then it will show up under their pictures. Also, the students at this high school created a facebook group to discuss this, and it seems 2 people (possibly school personnel) created fictitious users on facebook just to 'spy' or whatever you want to call it.

Dale: where in the article does it say the pictures were on their own facebook page? It just says they were on facebook, so it could have been anyone that uploaded them. If you, as an adult, get a traffic ticket, you have the chance to go to court to fight it. According to an NBC26 article, these kids were handed punishments without 'getting their day in court' - their parents didn't even know about the issue until after the punishments were handed out.

The ACLU is currently representing 2 girls in a lawsuit against Churubusco High School for suspending them because of pictures on their myspace page. They admit the pictures were real, but say the school has no legal right to punish them for something that happens off school grounds. It will be interesting to see the outcome, as precedents will be set as far as what power schools have.

ever heard of photoshop? or any of the other photo editing software programs that are available? maybe someone had a grudge.... doctored the photos.... it doesn't say they admitted to the crime, so maybe they are innocent.
On Trek around Geneva Lake is one long walk

I did that hike once. It was fantastic. I'd like to do it again. The only strange part is that while by law the lake path is open to everyone, somehow a certain subdivision managed to close their portion of the path and they make everyone go out to the road and around. That part of the hike is not very nice. I have always wondered how they got away with that?

An "East Campus Mall" has been in the plans for many many years according to this article. It looks like this is a much bigger project than just a music hall. I also found that they have over $20 million in donor money for the music hall so far.
