On Town chairman suggests fire departments explore merger

Great thought Rick. I am not sure I would agree with going from 2 to 1 department. But I am sure they could down size the number of trucks they have. But this will go no where because the fire departments have been the golden eggs forever. No one dares to say anything about them or even think of making them down size or give up anything. Rick you have kicked a bee hive. I can hear the buzzing around the hive already.

Hergert says "You lose this, this community's gone." That's because he sits there all day everyday with his nose stuck in everyone's business. And if it closed he would have nothing else to do with his life.

I just learned that there are kids that live right in Orfordville that are being bused to Newark to keep the numbers up. A couple students live within 1 block of the Orfordville Elementary. Like they can see it from their house. How crazy is that.

One other note. When you buy a home in the country and then have kids don't complain that they have to ride a bus. If you don't like bus rides don't live in the country or move closer to town where the schools should be.

Closing Newark is a long term solution to a long term problem. And if the kids can be merged into the other two grade schools then it should be done. And in doing so if we need two less teachers than so be it. The other fact here that is never in these stories is the number of kids that are bussed to Newark from the Orfordville/Footville area. The district has families volunteer to have their kids go there just to fill some seats in the classroom.

How many of the kids that go to Newark really live down there? We are busing kids from right outside of Orfordville to fill the seats in Newark.
While it might be nice for the teachers to only have 12-14 kids in their class I just don't see how we can continue to pay for that. I don't want to seam like an old fuddy duddy, but we had 20-30 kids in our classes and we did fine.
It appears that we can go to 2 grade schools and do just fine. So a teacher may have to have a few more kids in the class. I think our teachers can handle that.

Why do they need state money to do this? Another case of why the state budget is in trouble. There is no reason they need state money to pay city staff to count trees and set up committees. They should also be able to cut down a few trees a year with their own budget. $5,000 may not sound like a lot of money but it all adds up.
