So in other words, the state doesn't do very comprehensive background checks on high level employees.

People w/o computer skills can find the tests challenging & can take it on paper before the end of the year. Ah - shouldn't we be encouraging these people to get computer skills since this is the 21st century?
On Poverty poses challenges for educators

I think some of the comments are rather naive. Districts that deal with high poverty rates, generally speaking have a high population of single parents who could care less. We're talking kids who come to school hungry, in need of showers, clean clothes, parents who condone alcohol & drug use... I know of a WI teen who died recently in a car crash. Out until wee hours on a school night coming back from a rave. Marijuana & alcohol bottles in the casket. That's what some of these high poverty districts are up against. Doesn't exactly make it as easy to teach the 3 r's as some would think. I'm guessing Clinton, Jordan & others didn't come from these sorts of train wreck homes.

Given this report I sure am glad all people across the country & in DC have to talk about are the gay marriage & gun control debates.
On When classmates die too soon

A dear friend of mine has dealt with the death of 4 students at his high school in 2 separate traffic accidents in just over a year. Another friend just lost her otherwise healthy 6 year old daughter to a freak seizure. I never want to go a funeral for a 6 year old again. I guess these are the deaths that are hardest for me to deal with - people who never got the chance to graduate high school, get married etc...
On Pick up that trash in your yard
Posted on April 9 at 9:59 a.m. ( Suggest removal )
Fortunately I don't have this issue where I live because my neighbors have great pride in ownership. Yes there is an occasional newspaper or a wrapper I need to pick up, but I think that's a function of trash flying away on windy garbage pick up days. However, I have noticed there is a huge amount of trash in the business park I work in. There is a low cost extended stay hotel in the area & it brings a lot of foot traffic / low income long term residents. I think it comes down to lack of ownership. I bet a lot of the problems are with renters / people who don't have a stake in the property & therefore could care less. I think fines are probably the only way to take care of this. Wasn't there recently a column about Iowa's litter tattle line? I think that's a great idea.

We all got one of these in my community. Just happy I have a large 3 car garage because the thing is massive & my neighborhood doesn't allow these things to be kept outside. It's nice to wheel down to the curb as opposed to carrying the other bins.
On Walker says Evers win doesn’t affect vouchers

Walker's an idiot. I specifically went out & voted because of the Superintendent & Supreme Court races. Wislady you're clueless as usual. I pay to send my child to private school, but I voted for Evers. I'd be in favor of expanding vouchers for all, but the Walker administrations approach on identifying underperforming schools could not be more flawed. Evers an educator with almost 40 years experience gets that, unfortunately our uneducated governor does not.
On Does your home have an “electronic elephant”?
Posted on March 28 at 9:51 a.m. ( Suggest removal )
I think it comes down to parenting. My 6 yr old only child has a tv in his room, uverse with DVR, VCR/DVD combo, netflix, Ipod Touch, DS you name it, but he only uses those things in moderation. He loves Legos, reading & being read to & loves playing inside & outside. I have to drag him in from outside time & time again. If you are a lazy parent & plunk your kid down in front of the tv when they're little because you need an electronic babysitter & never play with your kids or read to them - what do you have to complain about because it seems to me you've created the problem.

On Internet sales tax bill faces tough sell in House
Posted on May 7 at 12:33 p.m. ( Suggest removal )
There is software that makes this relatively simple. The retailer would not actually send the money to the individual taxing unit. The software would do it automatically at the time of the sale. As I understand it, the problem is that this legislation allows states to come into other states & conduct audits. That is simply ridiculous.
