On Celebration of Caring inspires good deeds

Posted on September 15 at 5:47 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

My goldendoodle, Cooper, and I belong to Dogs on Call. It's an organization in southern Wisconsin whose members are registered Delta Society Pet Therapy teams and we go to hospitals, nursing homes, schools, libraries, and more with this mission statement in mind: "Promoting the Animal-Human Bond and Literacy Through Education, Evaluation, and Participation of Therapy Animal Teams."

We've been volunteering for a year and it's extremely rewarding!

On Do you volunteer your time?

I'm thrilled that Evansville has implemented this graduation requrement! I've always thought that kids need to be taught the benefits and sheer necessity of helping others. I volunteer my time at Meriter Hospital by taking my dog there for Pet Parner Therapy to brighten the spirits of the patients and staff. I've also volunteered at the community care closet, for the Relay for Life, and several others. I wish I had more time for it. It's the right thing to do.

On Do you still print your photos?

For the really great pictures, I do print them out either by going to Woodman's or through shutterfly.com. I've also made some really neat photo books through Shutterfly and always hear really positive comments from anyone who looks at them. The website makes it super easy to design and the prices aren't horrible.

On Hundreds turn out to apply for work at Stoughton Trailers

Posted on January 14 at 8:16 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I worked for Stoughton Trailers for 11+ years. It was hard, dirty work, and some of the management were less than brilliant. There were coworkers who worked their tails off and those who claimed they did but spent more time talking the talk than walking the walk. In the end, though, that job put food on the table and paid the bills, and I could go home every day knowing that I EARNED it. For anyone who wants to make an honest living and isn't afraid to make work a priority in order to take care of themselves and their family, it's a good job to have. Good luck to people fitting that description!

Gazettefan, my company took all of us to a show at the Overture Center last November. Can't think of the name offhand but it was a Broadway tour and was very good.

I, personally, like the variety of talents that a musical showcases; singing, dancing, acting, set design, technical design, etc. I don't have a great singing voice (I can carry a tune without a bucket, but that's about it! LOL) so I've always done plays as far as onstage work goes. Thankfully, my role in Oklahoma! doesn't require me to sing much, but others who do are amazingly talented and I could listen to them sing all night!

Gazettefan, this is actually the first musical I've acted in. I've been involved in the production of others, and have acted in several plays. My love of live theater (plays and musicals) goes back to my parents taking me as a child to the high school performances.
What's your point?

As a member of the cast of Oklahoma!, I may be biased but this is a really great show! We've got singin', shootin', dancin', and lots of laughin' so it'll be well worth going to see! A great way to beat the heat! I really hope to see you there!

On Family talks about teen suicide so others don't suffer in silence

My heart goes out to this family. I commend them for sharing their story and doing what they can to raise awareness and erase the stigma attached to mental illness and depression. I can remember so many suicides in Evansville over the past 20 years, and feel that it is vital that we not only learn to look for the signs and try to recognize circumstances that may lead to suicide, but also how to lend our support to those who have been affected by the sadness of losing their loved ones to suicide.

On Owners, dogs enjoy protection training program

We have had nothing but excellent experiences with Kenlyn Kennels. We started going there years ago to have our cocker spaniels groomed. After they died, and we got a new puppy (a goldendoodle), we took her for classes at Obey U and for grooming. We now have two doodles and take both there. We've also taken them there for doggie daycare and for boarding when we've gone on vacations. We've had nothing but positive experiences with everyone employed there. The facility is always clean, and they are always professional and have an obvious love of dogs.

We were there to drop our dogs off for grooming once when the Schutzhund club was there and were very impressed with what we saw.

What a nice story to wake up to!
