We moved here from Madison after renting for a year up there. We found a house for a really great price and in a really great neighborhood. The difference in house size vs. price in Dane county is huge compared to Rock County. We got nearly double the house size for $75,000 less! That price difference more than makes up for the fuel costs since I drive a small fuel efficient car.

I have been commuting to Madison for five years now and am glad we chose Janesville! We love the neighborhood we live in and all the things it has to offer! (farm market, rotary gardens, and of course all the parks!!).

I was thinking the same thing, Love2bmama. None of those tips suggest a full day is needed to do all of those things. The only one that would even require maybe an hour or two of time is making a large batch of home made waffles. And that could easily be done on the weekend and enjoyed during the week.

@NoLeftist- socially concious can be defined as social awareness; to be aware of the problems that different societies and communities face on a day-to-day basis; to be conscious of the difficulties and hardships of society.

In this situation, she buys a lot of local produce. That is being socially conscious. Spending your money supporting the local market instead of purchasing everything from a big corporation that is selling products from other huge corporations. Meaning much less money is staying in the community.

I had so much fun with the kids doing this! Can't wait to do it again next year.

Here's an amazing presentation of before/after images of many of the world's largest buildings and landmarks. Click on the images to see the lights turn out.

An amazing sight! And I can only imagine how much energy was saved in just that one hour. Imagine if it could be done monthly, weekly, or even daily!

On Wearing Baby Safely

And don't forget, Real Men Wear Babies too! Out of the fifteen or so that we have, ok that might be an exaggeration :-), one of them was specifically mine and another that we shared that I very much liked. Yes, as a giant 6'8" man I got lots of funny looks with this package of little human on my chest but it was a wonderful experience for me. There were many a night that I was able to get both of our girls to sleep by having them in my pouch and walks around the neighborhood were more cozy for both of us. Wonderful times!

You'll probably think we're mean parents. We've got a four year old but don't let her watch most G rated movies because most of them, like Disney's animated films, often depict quite a few violent acts and language we don't think she needs to be hearing until she's a bit older. The standards these day seem to have changed so much. Even just the commercials during primetime are so violent that we tend not to watch as much tv these days until the kids go to sleep. Thank goodness for Hulu! We still get to watch our shows, just at a later time.
.
We tend to stick to the PBS/Nick Jr. type movies (Olivia, Curious George, Dora, etc.) She enjoys them and for the most part isn't exposed to the things I mentioned above. But that's just our choice. All parents have the right to let their kids watch what the feel is appropriate for their age.
.
And I personally love the movies that are in the PG-13 range. Up was fun, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was cute. My wife and I are huge fans of the Harry Potter series. The latest one is the best by far! But like lots of the primetime commercials the R movies seem to be pretty darn violent. And as I get older the less I care to see that. So, I look forward to when my girls are older and we can enjoy some of these movies together!
.
p.s. thanks for the website recommendations. We look forward to checking them out.

On Jaloit/Beloiville

I'm not a native of WI and have lived in Janesville for the past four years and originally had only heard from others about how bad Beloit is. Come to find out that there are some really great things in Beloit that are better than in Janesville.

I feel like a traitor because as much as we love going to the Janesville farmer's market we discovered the Beloit farmer's market this past year and have gone to their's more than J-ville's. Both are great, but as a person that buys as much local and organic produce as possible, the Beloit market had more choice and some of the vendors seemed friendlier (not that the Jviller's are unfriendly).

We also really enjoy the store/restaurant Bushel and Peck right in the center of the market. Really great environment for local foods and relaxing. We do really wish there was more happening in downtown Janesville. It's a shame to see all those beautiful historic buildings sitting empty while all the business goes out to Milton Ave. area. A bustling downtown would be so much fun!

We also really like the location of Janesville in relation to Madison and Chicago. I work in Madison and it's an easy 40 minute drive to work and lots of great food and a neat free zoo. And we're only 1.5 hours from Chicago which has a TON of stuff. In general, we really like the community that we have found in Janesville and don't think we'll be moving any time soon. But yeah for Beloisville! We love both places!

On Vanishing Halloween Candy: Is the Switch Witch to Blame?

Posted on November 2 at 11:58 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

@tink0803: I'm sorry it wasn't a great Halloween for you this year. In our experiences from living in Janesville for four years now, we were not expecting much for this Halloween as the past three have been fairly disappointing for us. On our block of four houses we are the only house that gives out candy. And on the surrounding blocks we were hard pressed to find a handful of houses.

But this year turned out to be really good! In just one block there were only two or three houses that were NOT giving out candy (leaving about 15 that did). We were pleasantly surprised!...for our kids sake that is. They had a really good time.

Though we must have taken our kids trick or treating at the same time as most others because when we came back to hand out candy there were fewer visitors after 6pm compared to last year. No doubt the weather was a factor. Last year was very mild and comfortable compared to this year's cold and blustery.

As for the Switch Witch, I think it's a great idea, for it allows the kids to choose... a ton of candy that will last a few days or a gift they can use well beyond that and a reasonable amount of candy. It is going to be a harder sell as they get older but definitely a smart and healthy choice. What kid really needs to consume several large bags worth of candy in a week's time (or even in a month's time)? I surely enjoyed it when I was a kid but definitely didn't need the tummy ache for the days to come afterwards.

And Mrs. Murphy, you are in no ways a mean momma! You did not forcibly take the candy from your daughter (I know, since I was there...being married to Mrs. Murphy). Our daughter was given the opportunity to make the decision for herself and she willingly chose to keep some candy and get the special gift instead of keeping all of the candy. Yes, we were very open with our her about the candy and how it is not healthy for you and she made a great decision (in our opinion).

SuperDave, I believe she did mean to use "drawing straws" idiom, as she was deciding for herself which park to go to. She metaphorically drew straws to decide on which park to play at. Taking a "straw poll" would have meant getting other people's opinions on the matter.
