On Small earthquake in Illinois felt in Wis.

That's the first earthquake I've felt in just over 15 years when I moved here from San Francisco.

On 'I wanted her to feel my pain'

The death penalty is always a touchy subject, but why can't it exist for these open and shut cases? Why can't it exist where there is irrefutable proof of a criminal's guilt (i.e. the people whose crimes are blatantly witnessed by others in broad daylight or caught on video)?

Joeflint talks about the two scenarios of the theft of a loaf of bread...clearly the circumstances for that crime should be investigated and I'm all in favor of the starving man trying to feed his family getting off scot-free (this one time) and being led to a shelter.

But a person was murdered and murder in this fashion is inexcusable. Any act where a person dies needs to be thoroughly investigated. In some cases, as in the present situation, the investigation will be short. If a person kills someone else in self-defense, that also needs to be investigated. If it is truly self-defense in which the potential victim's life was in danger, I would not convict the person who killed the other of murder or even manslaughter. As far as I'm concerned, if another person intentionally wants to kill someone and the table is turned, other lives may have been saved.

I definitely understand all the "fine lines" my ideas present and, if we can't abide by them and there truly is a risk of putting an innocent person to death, then the system is flawed and probably unfixable. So send these criminals to a desert prison camp, let them grow their own food, produce their own energy (for their TVs for pete's sake), and make their own clothing. People who commit crimes these days have absolutely no fear of consequences. One way or the other, that needs to change.

On Woman seriously injured in Interstate accident.

Sandman: "whatever this female driver was doing," and Localboy: "Why is a 76 year old woman driving on the Interstate"...any idea why you two added the words "female" and "woman" to make your statements seem important? Let me guess...you're both men who think that only men can drive well. Hmm...let me think about that a moment. Let's see, yeah, I think it was a male driver (about three summers ago), in a government vehicle, who crossed the interstate median (in broad daylight, perfect weather) and killed a local Milton woman, leaving behind two young daughters(I wonder if these two girls will be forever prejudiced against "male" drivers). Almost exactly a year later, an Illinois driver was killed when a man driving his family in his van also crossed the interstate median (also perfect weather) and struck the other person's truck (I was in the traffic caught behind these two horrible accidents). If I had the time and the space, I'd continue to point out accidents where men were at fault. I drive the interstate everyday and guess who I see driving the stupidest on it... I will agree there are some horrible female drivers out there, but there are also some horrible male drivers out there. Let's classify them properly: horrible drivers.

On Deputies investigating rural home invasion

Does anyone besides me find it very sad that society is having to go toward the policy of NOT being able to help people because of crimes like this? I moved here from California almost 14 years ago, partly because of that attitude in CA...crime is so rampant out there, no one can trust anyone, so people only look out for themselves. Wisconsin was different, but it won't be for long. Because criminals feel they have nothing to fear, partly due to the lax justice system, partly due to homeowners not defending themselves, these types of crimes will rise. I believe in protecting myself with whatever means possible and if that means answering the door with my .357 in my hand, so be it.

On Appleton man killed while hunting

First of all, my sympathies go out to the family of this man, and to anyone who has lost a friend or loved one to any tragic accident. And while one death is too many, there is always a chance something might happen in the woods due to various circumstances. Sometimes it is just fate, like the person who religiously wears a seat belt and dies in an automobile accident. I am personally surprised (although pleasantly) at the usually low number of fatal occurrences during the 9-day season (Rice Lake was a horrendous exception) which goes to show that the majority of hunters are heeding the four key rules: treat every gun as if it is loaded; always keep muzzle pointed in safe direction; be aware of what is beyond your target; and keep finger off trigger until it is time to shoot.

On Milton man called 911 hours after he crashed motorcycle

Posted on July 29 at 10:34 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

There is a very important lesson to be learned here...get a cell phone and keep it close to you. I drive down the interstate between Edgerton and Madison every day. I was looking at the sides of the interstate and realizing how easy it would be to have a motorcycle, or even a small car, be invisible if an accident happened when no one was around to see it. Even in the median in some places it is very brushy and thick in the middle of summer. It's a good idea to have one of those hammers to break your window and slash off a seatbelt, as well as a cell phone in a pocket, just in case. It might not be needed often, but if it saves your life just once, it's worth it.

I also hope this lucky man gets better soon.

On Quarterback Brett Favre will be back, local Packer fans believe

Posted on July 10 at 12:39 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Okay, first of all, I can't believe the Gazette is wasting ink on a story of pure conjecture. That would be like running a story that there might be another week of torrential rainstorms causing more flooding in the near future. Guess what? There are billions of things that "might" happen...where do you draw the line of writing stories about them?

Second of all, I can't believe those of you with your petty bickering about Brett Favre. Either you like him or you don't and, honestly, who cares what you think besides you? That's the great thing about this country, you're allowed to believe what you wish...more power to you.

Third of all, I can't believe the time I've wasted, reading this article (which is not "news"), reading the petty comments of the posters, and writing my own thoughts.

On Gun ban ruling has Chicago thinking it's next

Posted on June 27 at 10:18 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I think the gun control debate will never cease. But what it really all boils down to is accountability for one's actions. Today's society is held less and less accountable for their actions and, if this continues, crime is only going to get worse.

Anti-gun advocates claim "guns kill." The fact of the matter is, people kill. I have a handgun. As far as I know, it has never gotten up out of the drawer and killed anyone. If it ever does kill anyone, it won't be because it thought it should do that all by itself, it'll be because I made the choice to do so. Because I consider myself a law-abiding citizen, well versed in gun safety and having more than a bit of common sense, the only time that will happen will be in self defense against an intruder in my home. I will make that decision, not my .38 or .357.

Whew, thanks for that clarification...thought I was losing my mind...wait, that's been long gone. Someone mentioned something about hitting a bottle? Who needs to destroy more brain cells (I need the few I have!)...
