On Appleton man killed while hunting

Posted on November 24 at 12:51 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

First of all, my sympathies go out to the family of this man, and to anyone who has lost a friend or loved one to any tragic accident. And while one death is too many, there is always a chance something might happen in the woods due to various circumstances. Sometimes it is just fate, like the person who religiously wears a seat belt and dies in an automobile accident. I am personally surprised (although pleasantly) at the usually low number of fatal occurrences during the 9-day season (Rice Lake was a horrendous exception) which goes to show that the majority of hunters are heeding the four key rules: treat every gun as if it is loaded; always keep muzzle pointed in safe direction; be aware of what is beyond your target; and keep finger off trigger until it is time to shoot.

On Milton man called 911 hours after he crashed motorcycle

There is a very important lesson to be learned here...get a cell phone and keep it close to you. I drive down the interstate between Edgerton and Madison every day. I was looking at the sides of the interstate and realizing how easy it would be to have a motorcycle, or even a small car, be invisible if an accident happened when no one was around to see it. Even in the median in some places it is very brushy and thick in the middle of summer. It's a good idea to have one of those hammers to break your window and slash off a seatbelt, as well as a cell phone in a pocket, just in case. It might not be needed often, but if it saves your life just once, it's worth it.

I also hope this lucky man gets better soon.

On Quarterback Brett Favre will be back, local Packer fans believe

Okay, first of all, I can't believe the Gazette is wasting ink on a story of pure conjecture. That would be like running a story that there might be another week of torrential rainstorms causing more flooding in the near future. Guess what? There are billions of things that "might" happen...where do you draw the line of writing stories about them?

Second of all, I can't believe those of you with your petty bickering about Brett Favre. Either you like him or you don't and, honestly, who cares what you think besides you? That's the great thing about this country, you're allowed to believe what you wish...more power to you.

Third of all, I can't believe the time I've wasted, reading this article (which is not "news"), reading the petty comments of the posters, and writing my own thoughts.

On Gun ban ruling has Chicago thinking it's next

Posted on June 27 at 10:18 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I think the gun control debate will never cease. But what it really all boils down to is accountability for one's actions. Today's society is held less and less accountable for their actions and, if this continues, crime is only going to get worse.

Anti-gun advocates claim "guns kill." The fact of the matter is, people kill. I have a handgun. As far as I know, it has never gotten up out of the drawer and killed anyone. If it ever does kill anyone, it won't be because it thought it should do that all by itself, it'll be because I made the choice to do so. Because I consider myself a law-abiding citizen, well versed in gun safety and having more than a bit of common sense, the only time that will happen will be in self defense against an intruder in my home. I will make that decision, not my .38 or .357.

I'd say that qualifies for the DUH award!

On Rock River in no hurry to recede

Whew, thanks for that clarification...thought I was losing my mind...wait, that's been long gone. Someone mentioned something about hitting a bottle? Who needs to destroy more brain cells (I need the few I have!)...

On Rock River in no hurry to recede

Okay, I'm confused on the "perspective" the Gazette lists here. How can 1.44 inches (the level the floodwaters have receded in Indianford) equal the width of two toothpicks? 1.44 inches is longer than the length of my thumb knuckle to the tip of my thumbnail, yet the width of two toothpicks is approximately an eighth of an inch. Am I missing something here or is this listed incorrectly?

On UPDATE: GM plant to close by 2010

Posted on June 3 at 12:43 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Having many friends who work at GM, I am sad for them. However, the times we're in now differ greatly from the 20th century depression era. All of these employees will be considered displaced workers when the doors close. Displaced workers have many opportunities from which to benefit, if they so choose. There is no reason why they can't take advantage of the free schooling that will be offered to them and learn a new trade. Everyone (kids and adults) need to start looking at what professions will be around until the day they die (computer techs, robotic machinery, plumbing, electricians, etc) and choose from there. We all know unskilled labor is being farmed out of the country so why not look to either a professional career or a skilled trade? We will all survive just fine, as long as people don't panic an think so negatively about everything. If you want a decent future, you have to make it...it won't just happen to you.

On Fantasy deficiency

Posted on May 20 at 11:30 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I'm one of those people who likes some fantasy and dislikes other fantasy; likes some sci-fi and dis-likes other sci-fi...not really gung-ho about either genre but willing to give them a chance. I can understand not being able to get into the Tolkien books...they are hard to read, but Harry Potter, on the other hand, is so well written that those books are hard to put down. This is a case of "it depends on the author." I think my biggest fantasy faves are the Chronicles of Narnia and the Harry Potter series.

On Del Taco restaurant will open today on Milton Avenue

For fish fry, if it's not too far a drive, Norm's in Busseyville is awesome. Also, Kemler's Lamp off 106 in Fort has the best cajun grilled cod...it's a spicy-lover's paradise! (Both Norm's and the Lamp are on Lake Koshkonong). Road Dawg's by the Interstate (used to be Country Kitchen)had fairly decent fish (great burgers too). The Showboat in Indianford used to have the best fish fry but I can't stand Bubba so I don't go there anymore.
