Posted on April 27 at 7:44 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Oh boo hoo. My kid plays hockey and that sport costs us, out of pocket, about $1000 per year. Suck it up. What's more important, sports or your kid's education???

On Gov. Walker proposes deep cuts for schools

Go Scotty! Cut $1.5 billion from schools and create those 250,000 jobs. Just be prepared to give 'em away to people who went to school in ANOTHER STATE because Wisconsinites will be too stupid to fill the positions. What a dimwit.

On Taxes, class sizes on school agenda

Momof4 - thanks for the info. I think I'll do just that with the last 3 of my 4 kids. I'm sick of this crap. I left the district a few years ago (as a teacher) partly because of all this hullabaloo. I'm so much happier where I teach now...I don't know why I didn't move my kids out of JSD then. I doubt the JSD board will ever pull their heads out of their a#$es.

On Janesville School Board faces stark choices

Posted on January 27 at 10:48 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

I think a combination of these solutions is in order. Athletics are a wonderful thing for kids for many reasons but I believe charging them a usage fee is the best solution for that, not dropping the programs all together. The $50 or $75 usage fee now is not enough. My kid plays hockey and we pay around $1000 per season for all the things needed. In addition, close one of the elementary schools and then relocate the ESC and the charter schools to that building, saving tons in monthly rents for building the JSD doesn't own. That'd be a start. Raising taxes is a good option too, but maybe going for a 5% increase would be more palatable to the community. We need a place to begin, folks.

On Janesville teachers disquieted over layoff predictions

reality_bites: As a teacher, I must respectfully disagree with your statement that all teachers who have experience are better teachers. While some certainly are, I believe that at a certain point, many experienced teachers are just lazier. Some of them are so stuck in their ways that they barely maintain the status quo and are not as innovative as they could/should be. Additionally, in almost every other profession, employees get an annual, performance review. There are lots of things to consider when discussing the merit of an employee...it doesn't only have to be about the performance of an educator's students. It is frustrating to be in a position where you are a terrific, innovative teacher who gets a good response and positive reviews from administration and parents, only to lose your job to someone who's been sitting on their butts "maintaining" until their retirement. JMHO.

FYI: Both ATFs are owned by a Janesville resident. Just because a business is a franchise doesn't mean it isn't locally owned.
