On Wis. regents want universities to lower book costs

Posted on December 5 at 4:56 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

When I went to UWW as an undergrad I worked in the textbook rental, so I actually happen to know a lot about this topic...
.
Yes, the rental system is amazing. It costs students roughly $65/semester to rent books. However, it is VERY costly to start up a textbook rental because books are so expensive. Publishers somehow convince professors that they NEED the newest edition with the CD, or the Study Guide, or whatever crap comes with it. So the professors go with that package and end up using only the book, even though they paid for the whole package.
.
The other thing Professors need to realize is that although a new edition comes out every couple of years, it's mostly the same information. Maybe a chapter got moved in the sequence, but rarely is it much different. Mostly just updated dates in example problems.
.
I hope other schools in the UW system can eventually move to a rental system, or at least have some of their books for rent instead of purchase. I know first hand that you get back a mere fraction of what you pay for a new book if you sell it back. Hopefully costs go down in the future, although that does not seem to be the trend.

On UW-Whitewater student arrested on gun charges

stupidjanesville...Older students banned from campus...you ARE kidding, right? Because they have some of the most interesting and applicable experiences I have heard. They contribute a lot to class, so I truly hope you're just kidding.

On Two UWW students recant sexual assault claims

Posted on November 4 at 10:28 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Lock them up? They didn't stage an abduction, they just made a false claim. The police say they have person reasons for doing so, and they're satisfied with the results, so maybe we should be too. I don't think they should be let off completely, but thrown in jail? They're not criminals, for goodness sake.
.
And second, maybe some fear SHOULD be instilled into girls who walk home alone at night, or anybody for that matter. Whitewater is not as safe as it used to be. How many robberies have there been in the last month? I can think of at least 3. Times are changing, people are desperate, and some will do crazy things. It's not bad to have a little fear if it makes you aware. That's just my thought.

Agreed, mymaro, Woodmans does indeed rock. I wish there were more of them, and closer to me. Gotta love it!

fan2884...a Sentry? We have a Sentry in Whitewater...and that's all. We all go to Janesville to Woodman's or Super Wal-Mart or to Delavan's Super Wal-Mart for big shopping trips. Sentry works in a pinch, or for milk and butter, but it is terribly expensive. Be thankful you don't have one. I'm hoping they convert our sub-par Wal-Mart into a Super Wal-Mart, but that's unlikely.

On On abortion, Obama running fast from record

Truth1, you are REALLY getting my blood boiling. You said, "Some people will justify it for "psychological health" reasons or calling "rape" only after pregnancy was discovered which are mostly just baloney excuses." That is possibly the most offensive thing I've ever heard. As someone who was raped 2 weeks ago, the thought of being pregnant has crossed my mind. I would never get an abortion, but that should be MY choice. Maybe some people have claimed rape when it wasn't, but don't you DARE make the ignorant statement that most claimed rapes are "just baloney excuses."

On Silent fifth quarter: UW Band suspended

BTC, why do you have to go and slam UW-Whitewater? I went to both UW-Madison and UW-Whitewater, and I definitely prefer UW-Whitewater. Actually, one of the main reasons I went to UW-Madison in the first place was because of the atmostphere at the sporting events. It's true, the band brings a ton of energy to the crowd. It's unfortunate they didn't listen to the warnings, because now UW is going into the toughest game of the season without a big part of their support.

This dude asked my best friend to marry him too...no kidding, he even set a date - 06/07/08! Alas, the day came and went, no wedding. Bummer.
.
But I do see him out downtown Whitewater sometimes, and I always thought he was a little off...now I KNOW he is, and I will always have a body guard.

On Parents accused of teaching kids to smoke pot

clouds555, am I wrong, or are you defending the parents? I am not opposed to pot, by any means, but I think there's an age where it's acceptable to smoke, and something tells me that 9 years old just isn't it. And 3-years old and 1-year old? Be serious for a minute. That's wrong to teach your child. No, pot's not the worst drug out there, but that doesn't mean you should give it to your child.

Thanks a ton thekid3477 for clarification, and tjncj for the article. My next question...did anything happen to the victims who were on the other end of the drug deal? I mean were they just let off the hook, despite being involved in a (fake) drug deal?
