On Recall effort finds support in Rock County

If you want to sign the petition securely, go to the Recall Walker office in Janesville which is in rented space in the UAW building on Lafayette St. behind A&W and beside Pick 'N Save. Also, volunteers collecting legitimate signatures in public have blue & white laminated ID badges from Recall Walker. It is ok to sign more than once because all the signatures will be verified by the Government Accountability Board before being certified and counted -- duplicates will not be counted.

Check www.opensecrets.org and see how many legislators accept donations from the drug industry and you will see why the companies don't worry about serving the public.

One of the main reasons we are in this mess is that recent school boards have not levied the tax that was allowed, I believe because they were trying to get re-elected rather than think ahead to the future. We have this one year to try to "catch up" with a substantial increase; next year that option will not be available. So, DO IT NOW... no more raiding the Fund Balance (which is not a surplus) but will affect future borrowing and cost us more money in the long run. It is time for taxpayers to face the music and bring the tax into some sort of line where it should have been for years now. If that means one less carton of Marlboro's or several six-packs for some, so be it! I am not a teacher and I am living on fixed income, too, but this is the only right thing to do. I expect the bloggers here will have at me,... so be it. I, as well as my kids, had a great education in Janesville and it is now our turn to see that the current crop of kids have the same advantages.

Thanks to the Gazette for posting these old pictures and to the folks who comment on them. It is fun trying to remember the old days shown here.

to codger---the theater on Main Street was the Beverly Theater. Upstairs was a medical clinic called the Munn-Koch Clinic as I recall. It included a drug store called the Beverly Pharmacy. The clinic became the Janesville Medical Center and moved to East Milwaukee St. when the old theater was torn down, as I recall. It later moved farther out Milwaukee St. and was eventually sold to Mercy where it is now Mercy East. So I guess I am a codger, too!

Although new business is good, it is also a little sad.....Mr. Steak was a great place as well as was Roherty's for all those years.

I think before it was Jupiter, there were two Kreske stores (which reorganized and later became Kmart). They were both on Milwaukee St. One was the "dime" store and across River St. was the "dollar" store where the merchandise was a little more expensive.

doc0430....you are SO correct! The downtown was very busy because there were businesses that people wanted to visit and the direction of traffic had nothing to do with it.
