Love reading your blogs. Brings back fond memories of military postings to new countries. I see the range of emotions you describe are similar to most of us that chose to embrace new surroundings.
I suggest you keep journaling, in addition to this fine blog, and consider publishing the results. I for one, would truly enjoy reading it.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with use from both Turkey and Brazil
On Hey, folks, Milwaukee Street isn’t the freeway

I was the corvette driver. I normally stop for pedestrians unless I'm being tailgated. In this case the SUV hadn't crested the hill when Ibegan braking and I was as surprised as you. I'm always concerned when I stop for pedestrians in the Milwaukee St crosswalks because so often a car speeds around me while they're crossing.

My take on this:
Most readers are capable of distilling information from the 'out there' contributors.
You already separate most of the political endorsement letters from your other letters to the editors. Maybe you create a here's your forum - but we're not sure what to make of it section as well.
At least they're signed, unlike the sound off (which is still a pretty good read).

It's a great start. All we need now is to find a way to clean the river bottom of all the accumulated mud, muck, silt etc.....

It seems to me that there isn't much material change in the recent decision. Instead of creating a PAC or funneling money through it, the corporations/unions can simply create their own ads. I agree it's very difficult to follow the reasoning in the text of the decision. It appears to be a narrow interpretation of free speech and I have to agree with the undelying principles, but I still hate all the issue ads.
I doubt there will be any more or less drivel to wade through during the election season. At least now we might actually know who is really behind the message.

I'd also add 'way to go'to both Anna Marie Lux and Catherine Idzerda.
They both provide local perspective and illustrate what separates the community newspaper from a national/state publication.
I always enjoy their articles. They both provide high quality material, albeit from a somewhat different perspective.
