On We throw away $500 of food?

I just started reading an article in this week's People Magazine about a family whose garbage for an entire year fits into a quart glass jar. A very interesting read about taking reduce, recycle, reuse to a whole other level. That is looking at more than just food waste, but I think the premise is certainly food for thought.
On “I want this election over – now” – do YOU?

I am among those who wish the election was already over. I would be more apt to be excited about it if we spent times talking about real issues, realistic solutions, and hard data. I couldn't care less about who the candidate's wife is or how trusdtworthy is his dog. If it's not a real issue pertaining to working towards the good of the people, I am not at all interested in hearing about it.

My basic rule of thumb: you can eat it if it had a momma or came from the ground. Food should be as recognizable as possible from it's source.
That's not ot say I don't enjoy a good Dorito now and then, but I try really hard to stick to the plan. I can definitely feel it when I'm off plan. The snickers bar tastes OK, but I sure pay for it in how I feel later on.

Wow, kinda rough on Steve, don't you think?
I agree the USPS needs to work on re-creating itself into something to meet the times. Working some of the lesser known holidays would be a start, as would be working some non-standard hours to accomodate more of the working public's needs. I get very little really necessary mail anymore through delivery. Bills are paid online, subscriptions are read on the iPad, so I am left with birthday cards and junk mail that appear in the little box at the curb. I could easily cut that back to a couple days a week of delivery, maybe a Tuesday/Friday or Mon/Wed/Fri? Keep a couple folks working at the Service center more diverse hours and less people out delivering in the field and I bet the workforce would still be reduced and made more efficient.
I suggest looking at innovative ways to trim the fat and catch up with the times.

I never carry cash either. I am a debit girl all the way, easy to track and budget, and makes me accountable to myself for what I spend. If the kids need money at school, I have linked to their checking acount and just transfer some from mine to theirs - easy peasy.
On What's your radius for local shopping?

If I can buy from a local business or even a local branch of a chain store, I always prefer to go that way. Michaels Cycles in particular is wonderful and goes out of their way to make their customers feel wanted and needed.
There are a few local "niche" businesses that could use a lesson in hospitality- those are the stores I will take a trip to Madison or Rockford to shop somewhere where I feel welcomed and appreciated.

Steve, I can't tell you how much fun I had chasing all of you guys around the course Sunday. There is nothing more fun than watching newly minted Ironmen (and Iron Maidens) as they complete the course on race day. You all should be so proud of yourselves - you worked hard and earned your medal, not just Sunday but over the past year of training.
@Transformer: For the 65 or so people vying for Kona slots, it's a race. For most of the rest of the 2500 mere mortals, it's an expereince to be enjoyed. Stopping to catch a hug, a kiss, or a high 5 from a friend or family member is what gets you from moment to moment on a long, exhausting, exhilirating day.
@equinox: you should wear the band AND the medal until you aren't sore anymore, that's the rule at our house. Congratulations:)

On Doctor, Doctor?

Carr said it well, I agree wholeheartedly. If you earned the title regardless of which discipline it's in, use it but don't be obnoxious about it. Also, we should be respectful enough to use titles to address everyone, doctor or not. Common courtesy and manners go a long way in showing respect for each other.
